Thanks. I wonder if John Herbert Clugston(e) took the name Kinvig from his adopted family for the 1911 census. I thought GR would be a good site but obviously Ancestry sounds more informative.

GR isn't the best place to do research. They don't have any records of their own.......all are taken from other sources

The people who help on these boards use other sites.

Why is it I cannot find a Kinvig family in the 1901 Isle of Man census ? I already have the info but I want to check one person & I can get nothing on GR. Ann 44, Herbert 20, John 13 & the person I want to check - a 4 year old boy John Clugstone who was 'adopted' by Ann Kinvig. I would like to find out if it said 'adopted' & then find him on the 1911 census. I have this family on my CD rom but why can I not get it on this site ? Thanks

Best to leave it Kathleen, then any further queries relating, we can refer back.

On left side, under heading 'Tools', you will find it in 'My Threads'.

(you certainly have a lot of names there to work with, lol)

Thanks everyone. I have now printed out this info so do I leave this thread or delete it & start a new one later ? Ultimus meaning Last in Latin makes sense as mother was then 44 so she probably thought That's it ! No more !

Ultimus is the Latin for "last" and Gulielmus the Latin for William.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 3 Jan 2013 10:11

Morning,

The 1901 post I put up about Percy Baker Jackson, on the actual census form it does read Ultimus but is transcribed as William.

The other thing is that Ultimus could be an old spelling of William anyway as I have had a Guilimus in a tree somewhere which was the old spelling of Willliam.

Kathleen Report 3 Jan 2013 00:02

Thanks again for all that info. You are all helpful & kind to answer my 'teething' questions. I see that Percy B Jackson & all his siblings have father William & mother Charlotte. In the facts I have for all these chn it is Charlotte & Ultimus.I started on Ultimus because of his more unusual name - he must have had William also as a name. Poor Charlotte - she seems to have been pregnant every 18 months to produce 12 chn. I think Laurence Gordon must have died as I only have him to age 6. The reason I paid for the Parish registers records was mainly to research all Ultimus's siblings & their chn but so far I've found nothing.

Hi Kathleen,

Glad to see that MarieCeleste, Astra and Inky1 have pointed you in the direction of FamilySearch.

Its a great tool, and FREE!

Re your other question, if you have messages, either opening ones from another Genes member or in reply to your own, the ' Messages ' along the top of the home page will have the number of messages waiting for you.

Also, if you're not sure if your messages to other people have been read, go to your 'Sent' messages.

If the little envelope is still closed, then the message has not been read. If the envelope has disappeared, then they have opened it.

If you're trying to make contact, it's probably best not to use the automated Genes 'Request to view your tree one', as a lot of members find it quite blunt and uninformative. Probably better to replace the header with the name of the person you are enquiring about, and then replace the message by saying who you think you have in common, and what your relationship/interest is.

Some parish records are available on :

http://www.freereg.org.uk/

but it can be a bit hit and miss as it's a work in progress. Free though! :-)

Kathleen, no matter what access you have to various records it's inevitable that sometimes the only way to know who married who is to buy some certificates (order from GRO).

If the marriages were before 1911 then you can check out the various permutation of names from marriage index that way.

Thanks. As you say it's a matter of taking time to see what comes up. I'll check out that site again. The options I mentioned I got were from GR. I have sent requests to 2 people to view their trees on Ultimus Jackson. Have had no answer but not sure yet where exactly I find an answer ! Will it be obvious when I sign in that someone has answered. Do I have to have a tree before a person will let me view - I have started one but not much added yet. Thanks

It's well worth taking the time to become familiar with the site and see what it has to offer. There are some collections that aren't indexed and you just have to sit and plough through the images but you soon get the hang of it. And it's all free!
