Thanks. Much appreciated.

Looks like 10 Cottrell Road, but writing isn't too clever.

1891 with his parents address was 45 Rose Street

Gareth

Gareth Report 30 Dec 2012 11:03

Don't suppose it says the address that alfred, jas, florence etc lived at in 1901?

Gareth

Gareth Report 30 Dec 2012 10:39

Fantastic. All fits perfectly as Alfred's dad John James was from bedminster in bristol. Florence was born in 1862 and between her being born and Alfred being born they moved to Roath in cardiff. Is Jas short for James? Thanks for your help. I'm off now to race the Bristol side further. Have reached Joseph James born 1799 who is Alfred's grandfather but reached a dead end past that. Thanks again.

Although his name is wrong - if he is Jas Brain's b-i-l I would assume him to be Florence's brother and name should be James.

Hi yes that's him. He married late and his wife Edith was married previously. It's weird that he lived in Roath all his life, disappeared then reappeared. Someone suggested he went to war??

Is he the father of Frank and & your grandfather Edward?

If so, he was rather old to be getting married and having first child so wonder if he went abroad for a time/been married previously?

Could you post up the 1891 so we can see his family?

Gareth

Gareth Report 29 Dec 2012 21:33

That's him. No record of him on the 1901 census though.

Is he just missing from the family home or can't you find any of the family?

If you post up the 1891 or 1911 census details we can take a look.

Gareth

Gareth Report 29 Dec 2012 15:17

Great thanks. Another mystery on my list to sort out is why my great grandad was missing from the 1901 census. Alfred John James 1872-1930 Born cardiff. Have found him on every other census as a house painter living in the roath area of cardiff including the 1911 census but nothing in 1901. Any ideas?

Think that should be WW2 Jan ;-)

If you order the marriage certificate you should be able to check if your info was correct:

JENKINS Beryl JAMES Pontypridd 8b 965

Right, first query. You can purchase birth, marriage and death certs online from the GRO (General Register Office) - they cost £9.25 and usually take around a week to arrive, but it may be longer.
Google search GRO or just click on this link:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

You need to register and use a credit/debit card. You will need to use all the details from the birth entry I put above. Take your time filling in the online form as you need to get the details right.

Regarding the uniform, I would just do a google search for 'uniforms WW1' - there are lots of sites out there.

Jan - yes that's the brothers. Their mothers maiden name was Williams. I have a photo of frank when he went off to war, do you know of any sites where you can get military details based on uniform etc?

Gareth

Gareth Report 29 Dec 2012 10:22

Hi thanks for the responses. how do I go about purchasing the birth certificate?

Buy the birth cert for exact DOB, then get the matching death cert, for informant's details

This assumes that he died at some time up to and including 2006, and that he did not leave England/Wales

Welcome to the boards Gareth.
Firstly I would check if any other member happens to share this family - use 'search all trees' in search box above.
If you can ascertain his exact birth date this can be used to search for a death, but only if this occurred 1970-2006.
What was their mother's maiden name?
