Mary

Mary Report 2 Jan 2013 06:14

It was a second marriage for both James Barnshaw and Margaret Christy Barnard.
What you don't see online and what was noted on the marriage cert was that Margaret was married previously. This was not her first marriage.
She came to the USA in 1881 but I haven't found the passenger list for her yet.
it is possible that she married for the first time in the USA and not Ireland. So perhaps the marriage occurred here sometime between 1881 and 1896 the date of her second marriage.
As for the second immigration year of 1900 for Margaret, it may have been a census error by whoever was answering the questions that day.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Jan 2013 10:30

If Margaret went to the US 1881/2 she was only around 17/18 so likely her first marriage was in the US.

Mary you seem to have other snippets of info that you drop in - do you happen to know if Margaret had any other children by her first marriage?

Regarding the Margaret/Mabel thing you mentioned earlier and one being a pet name - I think they're two entirely different people going by the US census records and the info posted by Catherine and Maura.

Eringobragh1916 Report 2 Jan 2013 13:29

Mary..Have been looking through the thread and there appears to be some confusion as to Mabel/Margaret.

1900 NY Census shows Mabel aged 1 yr. with Mother Margaret Christy Barnard Barnshaw..father James Barnshaw.

Margaret Barnard aged 9 yrs was still in Co Tyrone with her Mothers family.

Margaret Barnard travelled out to US 1908 from Derry...manifest states she travelled with her Aunt and was going to her mother in NY.
The detail on the manifest shows a notataion next to Margarets name and the No's 51-3 I take that to indicate where on the Manifest is listed her Aunt's details...

I have looked through virtually all the Manifest and cannot come up with anything that may match..I am obviously missing something..!!
There were only 50 passengers boarded at Derry....
abt.392 boarded at Glasgow

Its possible that her Aunt boarded in Glasgow and Margaret joined her a from Derry.
I will keep looking through....!!

As I mentioned earlier if you know that Margaret Barnard married at some stage then her MC will confirm her fathers name...Maura has listed that earlier which corresponds with yr of birth etc.

Although it appears Margaret Christy went to the US as early as 1881ish ..It was rare to say the least (but possible) that folk were able return home and we know Margaret Barnard was born in Co Tyrone.....

Have you checked incoming passenger lists for Margaret ??

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Jan 2013 14:14

I'm finding the same as you Eringobragh .....

I've searched and searched the passenger lists for that elusive auntie and can find nowt!

Eringobragh1916 Report 2 Jan 2013 15:28

MC...Have checked backwards frontwards sidewards..!! Upwards and downwards comes next..!!!
It would be easier if you could elimate males/ female/ children equally the page eg.51 line 3 doesnt always tally with whats actually on the blasted page...it could be page 3 line 51..or anything come to that..!!

Mary Report 2 Jan 2013 16:13

MC AND EGB: I do have snippets here and there. I am rebuilding my tree after my computer crashed about a year ago and I realized that my backup drive did not have what I thought I had. I have all the USA census info that I need to coordinate. I don't have any grave index for this Christy branch save remembrance cards from here in NY:
Theresa Christy McAleavey d July 28, 1953
Margaret Christy Barnshaw d. Nov 14,1952

nothing for Mabel C. Barnshaw (thank you for that info)

and a mystery one for Mary C. Schlesselman d.Oct 22, 1969 that has a note on the card that indicates that she is my father's cousin (C=Christy). Again, this is someone I can't document at all save for a few photos of children that are noted as "Schlesselman"

ALSO NOTE: that Margaret Barnshaw's NYC home was a port for many, many incoming relations. In order to enter the US they needed a sponsor and some money in their pocket.

Mary....Going back to the Graves (Killyman) the death of Patrick Christy son of Thomas and Margaret is 1906..!!
Where does the above Patrick come from...??

Need this checking out..wonder if this is Patrick (RIP)..travelling with James Joseph aged 15... I know he was living with Annie Christy (1901)..down as her nephew....
Wonder who's son he was as Patrick was unmarried.
They both travelled on the Cymric out of Liverpool Dec 1901 but I cannot get them at all they are mixed up with over 200 Norwegians and Danes...!!!
The Cymric also picked up at Cobh but only 11 Passengers and they unfortunately weren't being very helpful and boarded L'Pool..!!
Their place of residence was Coalisland.

LOL, it' ll be a migrane you'll have by the time this is sorted out. Is your McAlveavey's from Co. Armagh by any chance?

Mary

Mary Report 3 Jan 2013 04:43

yes, Maura, we are from Armagh. Our branch moved to Lanark, Scotland sometime post famine. We've located a marriage cert from what is now St. Malachy's in Armagh for my ggg grandparents from the 1850s or thereabouts.
