John Harrop Davies- did he exist ?

The father's name was probably "made up" to save face with the in-laws.

It is also possible that the father was a John Harrop. Perhaps the registrar asked "what is your father's name?" and he said "John Harrop" and the registrar just assumed that they were his given names and that Davies was his surname because that was John Archibald's surname.

EDIT - Patchem came up with this theory before me, lol.

Just wondered if his father was John Harrop - or that was what his Mother had told him?

Harrop is quite a popular name around Manchester, several candidates for Father.

The father's name was undoubtedly imaginary

Illegitimacy was considered shameful in those days

Well as there is no father listed on his birth cert then would say the fathers name was made up as a face saver. was often the case.

Especially as his mum never married and was a Davies anyway

Are Sophia's parents Baldwright - in which case when did she become Davies?

Added:
No, parents are Davies, so Sophie was not married (or married another Davies)

Hi, On my Grandfathers birth certificate there is no name for his father but on his marriage certificate it has the name John Harrop Davies and his occupation as a bricklayer. I cannot find any information on this individual, do you think he existed ?. My Grandfathers name wasJohn Archiebald Davies born in 1890 in Crumpsall Manchester to Sophia Davies. In the 1891 census John is John Archie Baldwright living with Sophias parents in Llandyrnog, Denbighshire and Sophia living in Cheshire as a dressmaker. Sophia died in 1896.Dont know what the truth is but a family rumour is that she worked at Ruthin Castle prior to 1890 at the same time the Prince Of Wales visited a lot and he had an eye for the ladies, if you know what I mean ! . Anyway, if anyone has time to look up a John Harrop Davies, i would be truly greatfull. Thank you
