William's brother Alfred Thomas Dodge ended up in Canada and was drafted. Gave his father as NOK, fathers address 330 Hessle Rd, Hull. Alfred was a Well Digger.

Alfred Thomas Dodge (Single)
Residence: Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada
Birth Date: 20 Mar 1889
Birth Location: Plympton, Cw, England
Relative: Edwin Augustus Dodge
Relationship: Father
Regiment Number: 2129091

A tree on Ancestry has his wife as Sarah Elizabeth Fleger, but no date.

Looks like he emigrated in 1908, an 18 year old labourer on his own.

The only obvious connection to Co Kerry, Ireland is Edwin's work as a coastguard, and him being stationed there in 1901. I wonder if he left his 2 children with their grandparents temporarily, then took them to Ireland when he returned with his second wife?

There must be some reason/rumor for the relatives to believe William was born Ireland (or from Ireland?), but where the name Jones comes from I have absolutly no idea - haven't come across it in any of the research! The idea that he left home when about 14 would probably coincide with Alfred leaving for Canada in 1908.

Think it's more likely to be this one as the dob & name matches the birth record:

Dodge, William Alfred
Official Number: 15068
Royal Marine Light Infantry
Plymouth division
Enlisted 6/6/1911
DOB 12/12/1896

Thanks for posting that link Chris - I've just been searching for some of my own ancestors - but I've always struggled with the National Archives website.

Sarah you should find Edwin's record on there too.

Just popped in to have a look before I dash off again
I think the birth registration you posted for William could belong to the other William Dodge born in 1897 the son of Isabella and Alfred Dodge. This is the 1901. In 1911 he is noted as William Alfred. The birth was registered in the March quarter so which William Alfred Dodge was the one born 12th December who has the naval record and where is the other birth record.

Oh Sugar :-P :-P :-P

Back to the drawing board - the one we are looking for is also William A if his marriage record is to be believed, and has to be born before his mothers burial on 15th December 1896.

I'll take another look, but wonder if they neglected to register the birth with the mother dying?

Astra Report 1 Jan 2013 13:27

I wondered that too. If she died in childbirth then his birth registration could well have been forgotten although generally the registrar would do both at the same time.

Flip Report 1 Jan 2013 15:22

You're welcome,

So his birth date ties in with Chris's military record (which you can order online for around £3 from the link provided). If you get Edwin's military record you may be able to see when they he was on duty in Ireland.

There's no birth registration here or in the Ireland index to correspond with his birth though, so for some reason they must have forgotten to register him, or it's been so badly mis-transcribed we can't find it.

There's a form on the site where you can order the actual service records, they cost a few quid each, and are sent electronically. Should have more details on them both, so could be worth splashing out!

Flip

Flip Report 1 Jan 2013 16:19

No, the records are only available at the National Archives, which you can do for free, otherwise you need to order them.

I don't think you can even view the BMD records at your local office, but if you know the church they were married in you could check your local archive centre see if they have the parish registers on film.
