Thank you Chris
Yes I do have this information, I'm really trying to find more about what happened to Alfred in Australia

Adeline
I have tried the Newspaper site, without success, but I think I will have another go at it, I just wish he didn't have such a common name!

Adeline
Thank you, I had the birth dates but not the districts, so that is a little more information.

Marie Celeste
Elizabeth was born in Painswick Glos in 1831 to Samuel Halliday and Patience Clifford
Alfred is the problem, he was born in Gloucestershire (I think) in 1831 his fathers name was Thomas Davis and that is about all I know about him

It's worth trying the Australian newspaper site if you haven't already done so.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?adv=y

For example, I found this about an Alfred Davis who might be the one you are looking for:

GERALDTON.
Geraldton, July 17, 1898
Alfred Davis, manager of the Emorald Mine, Yalgoo, died at Victoria Hospital yesterday, of congestion of the liver, after a long illness.

William, if we can start at the beginning with where and when they were both born then we can start looking - their parents names might help as they're sometimes shown on death records.

Found them on the list, they were both aged 26 and from St Austell, Cornwall. Halliday was Elizabeth Mary's maiden name.

No, thats why I thought I may find something in that Biographical Index.
All I know is that they had 4 children in Australia and that Elizabeth and children came back to England before 1872. I know what happened to Elizabeth (she married again) and children after she got back to England, but I have nothing about why they came back or if Alfred came back too or whether he died and thats why she came back. One of the children gave Alfreds occupation as 'proprieter of a gold mine' on his marriage certificate, whether that was true or not I don't know. He probably was a miner though, as he was a copper miner in Cornwall before they went to Australia. I'd just like to know if he stayed in Australia alone.

MarieCeleste Report 3 Jan 2013 14:44

William, do you have all the details for them after they arrived in Australia? Can we help with that?

Adeline

Adeline Report 3 Jan 2013 14:43

You could try the Ask a Librarian service here:

www.slsa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=387

I have used this service in the past for a Queensland query and received free help though I seem to remember I had to pay for a photocopy of the details I needed.

Thank you Adeline, it seems I have to buy it if I want to know any more. Don't think I'll bother, it's a bit too expensive.

The ships list is a website that gives you information and passenger lists for immigrants to Australia. It's very good.

I have Googled and Googled and Googled. Thats how I get nearly all of my information on my family history. Thats how I found the ships list, but I just wondered what information was held in the biographical index. Thought it may be worth asking on here.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Jan 2013 14:29

This relates to Alfred Davis and Elizabeth Halliday who emigrated to Australia.
They arrived in Port Adelaide on the Clara 20 january 1859. I got this information from the ships list. Does anyone know what sort of information it would be? Or how can I find out about this biographical index? Thank you
