Hello Iris - have you looked that marriage up on FreeBMD?

EDIT:
These are the only marriages coming up with that reference and the years are wrong (and neither has an Elizabeth listed):

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1868
LONGSTAFF John Hartlepool 10a 141

Marriages Sep 1879
LONGSTAFF Thomas Hartlepool 10a 141

Where did you get those references?

Can you gives some further details like who their children were and do you have them on any census.

Hartlepool district only began in 1859

are you sure you have the right year ?

Before that it would come under Stockton

Have come across Iris' tree on Ancestry and the 1851 that GB posted is the one she has attached: (I'll delete mine)

Parents listed as John Langstaff 1809 - 1877 and Mary Myers 1815 - . Married 1835 in Sedgefield.

Mary

Mary Report 5 Jan 2013 09:33

I also have looked at the tree on Ancestry.1851 she has the above 1851 census whenJohn is a labourer.

The following census she has
1861 he is a Ships Joiner D9>10Bishop Wearmouth.
also with Elizabeth32 and Elizabeth 6

1871 Ships Joiner Monkwearmouth D6>68
Also with wife Elizabeth and daughter Elizabeth age 6 born 1855.just above Johns entry on original view is a Ann langstaff widow age about 70? and Robert T born 1840
I think she has got the wrong 1851 census.

1851 D4 >36.
John LONGSTAFF a Ships Joiner
Elizabeth
Mary Jane age one month.

A tree on Ancestry has the above John(Ships Joiner) marrying Elizabeth Mackie in 1848.

So we have two John and Elizabeth Longstaffs with daughters Elizabeth born 1855,I think John the ship joiner was born in Sunderland durham.

Maryb.

Edit just been checking again this is the one next door to John in 1871

1841 Monkwearmouth D2 >9
Ann Longsliff 33 widow (Longstaff)
Barbara 11
John 9
Robert 1

So it sounds like the 1851 I posted and deleted may have been the right one!

Seems like things have got in a bit of a muddle but until Iris comes back and says how she got to these people we can't really help sort it out.

Mary Report 5 Jan 2013 11:13

John Longstaff 1809 - 1877 married Mary Myers born 1815
They had John Longstaff 1846 - 1877 married in 1868 to Eleanor(Ellen) knox.
had Thomas (Tom) 1874 married Rose Annie Baxtrem.

Iris has Tom 1874,I think she has just got John's date of birth mixed up.

Info off trees on ancestry so please double check.

pm from Iris in answer to my query about who she was working back from

"I was working back from my grandfather Tom Langstaff 1874 and grandmother Rose Ann Baxtrem 1877 Married Dec 24 1894 in Eston
yorkshire heworked in Dormanlong steel works no father of tom recorded "

Iris - when you say "no father of Tom recorded" do you mean on a certificate, or someplace else?

Do you have the marriage certificate for Tom and Rose Ann? What does it say for his father on there? Was Tom named as Tom or Thomas?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 17 Jan 2013 23:26

Further pm:

"yes I have his marriage certificate 1894 he was a labourer and lived at holden st grangetown parish of Eston Registration district was Middlesborough. His brothers were John Henry 1870 Tom 1874 George1877. His Father was John and Mother Ellen Knox they were married in Hartlepool in 1868 "

Iris - what does it actually say on the certificate itself about his father, that's all I want to know - the facts from the certificate.
