Frances, I think you may be right about the myth!

Robert's father was from Brighton so unless he had distant family who had moved to West Yorkshire long ago then I don't think there's a connection.

MarieCeleste you are correct about the wikipedia link. This was where I found the quote listng Roberts uncles.
It states Robert was born in 1866 - sorry I omited that fact

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Jan 2013 12:16

Frances, how old would you expect Robert to be in 1881?

(You can search 1881 for free on other sites)

EDIT:
Think this must be him http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Armitage_%28politician%29

Your heading made it look like 1866 was when he would have been mayor.

Frances Report 5 Jan 2013 12:12

Just for the challenge!

My neighbour has Alice Armitage 1838 as an ancestor

from 1851 census
ARMITAGE, Alice Daughter F 13 1838 Worsted Weaver Drighlington, Yorkshire

The family believes they are related to Robert the mayor of Leeds :-

"He lived at Farnley Hall, Leeds.[5]
Armitage was the nephew of Edward Armitage and Thomas Rhodes Armitage, the uncle of Robert Selby Armitage, and second cousin once removed of Edward Leathley Armitage."

I cannot see who was Robert's father in the 1881 census but I think his mother could be Emily. Can any body see any links please as I think it maybe just a family myth !!

Many thanks,
Frances

p.s. The old Family Search 1881 census (that I relied on) seems to have disappeared or is it that I just can't see the link?
