Hi there, i'm trying to trace the Mayo line back and have got as far as the marriage of James Mayo and Eliza Smart in 1857 in Stepney, London.
It doesn't give either of their ages but i do know that James was a Coppersmith and his father was also James Mayo (possible a cattle dealer - it's hard to read!). But i can only find one James Mayo of the appropriate age born in Somerset who is a coppersmith in the 1881 census living in Newcastle! miles from his family in West Ham, Essex.
Very frustrating as i can't find anything else on him!

Thank you for looking into this, i have also found these census records and i think all of them are correct.
I know that he married eliza and i know they're children (i'm related from his son henry mayo). I did not realize that the 1881 census stated eliza has a widow, it is definitely her but then there is an 1881 census with a james mayo as a coppersmith very much alive but way up north!
It says he is from bath, somerset but this could be wrong and i have found no mention of his father james mayo anywhere - but he is on the marriage cert so must be alive.
It's tricky!
