Barbara, as asked earlier - do you have his marriage certificate or have you found his marriage record?

Have you assumed that Elizabeth Ann's surname was Richards because it was used as a middle name? It may have been a name passed down.

The records that Rootgatherer found suggest that she was actually Elizabeth Ann Salter. I'd suggest you order a copy of that 1877 marriage certificate detailed above.

(1) where you got his father's name?

and

(2) Where you got his wife's maiden surname?

and

(3) Why you think that his father was in the Royal Navy?

My sister, Elizabeth, has been doing a lot of reseach on Ancestory. I think that is where people have got some info. on Robert Franklin.

I have a family bible in which has my great grandparents at the start.

Robert Franklin born June 2nd 1852 married Alizabeth Ann Richards 16th Oct 1877 Portsea Parish church Liz has their marriage cert. and I think Elizabeth Ann Slater Richards birth certificate.
We know from records that he was in the navy.
Elizabeth Ann Richards daughter of George William Salter (born 1811 in Windsor) and Mary Richards (born 1824 crowan cornwall) married in Falmouth 1848. George died and Mary re-marrieed John Hutchens in 1867 She died in 1896 and her death was reported by her son George.

In the 1861 census Robert was living in Maidstone ( but was born in Sutton ) with his MOTHER ELIZABETH. no mention of father.
My reason for thinking his father was in the navy is that my grandmother told me there had been 100 years on continual franklin s in the navy which ended when her father left.

I think that the 1851 census shows that Robert's father was George Franklin a Builder.

It is unlikely that the family on the 1851 census is a different family from that on the 1861 as the names and ages of the children fit although the mother is listed as Ellen (a pet name of Elizabeth?).

What do others think please?

Barbar I was confused by your original post as you didn't give us Elizabeth Ann Richards maiden surname I thought that Richards was her maiden surname but now realise it was Salter.
