Born somewhere around 1840 - 1850. Lived in West Bromwich, Staffs around 1881 & died there in 1912. The problem is that in 1881, 1891 & 1901 censuses, which all appear to be him, his place of birth was Bradford, West Bromwich & Coventry & his year of birth varied. His son was Samuel, 1885-1953, born & died in West Bromwich, who married Ada Hackwood 1892-1957, born in Wednesbury, Staffs.

I see your dilemma in not being able to pin him down to a definite birth certificate. Perhaps he did not know himself where he was born.
Do you have his MC to Jane Cornwell? Perhaps that would mention a father to help in tying him down.
Is William A from the 1891 census Alfred in 1901?

And his death. I know you have all these records but it is helpful to us to be able to see them.

Thanks for your comments. As you may gather, I'm trying to get a Birth Cert for Edward, which is difficult with the confusing information as well as getting a Birth Cert for his wife, Jane. Likewise I can't find a Marriage Cert for Edward & Jane or Jane's death. According to Samuel's Birth Cert for 1 Jan 1885 at 2 Puddingbag Street (should it be 42 - the same house as for the 1881 census?), his Mother was Jane Foster, late Coleman, formerly Round. This is ironic as I've gone back at least 3 generations on the rest of my tree!

Marriages Sep 1864 (>99%) Cornwell Enoch W. Bromwich 6b 899 <<<<< LONGMORE William West Bromwich 6b 899 Rounds Jane W. Bromwich 6b 899 <<<<<<< Yardley Louisa W Bromwich 6b 899
as it was an Elizabeth Cornwell who married John Rhodes I think Samuel's birth cert should read mother Foster late Cornwell formerly Rounds
Enoch Cornwell died in 1873

Thanks, I'll try following it up.
I knew Elizabeth married John Rhodes but hadn't looked up the marriage.
I'm finding it difficult to know which records to trust, especially when there were remarriages (Samuel, Edward's son is believed to have married 3 times - I know he was married at least twice).

Possible death for Jane?

Possible birth? They all seem to have been a bit creative with their years of birth.

Thanks very much, alviegal, for Jane's possible birth.
As you say, they can be creative about date of birth in most documents (and place of birth). Sometimes, like with Edward, it's almost as if he's got something to hide!
The death would probably be wrong because Jane would be Jane Foster & would probably still be known as such even if she & Edward hadn't married.
