Looks like Mr Hughes was a Royal Navy man early on, think my gt grandad was merchant navy I suppose that is a logical transfer to make as you get older .

If he is a sailor then they could have been away at sea and missed out for whatever reason, or hiding under a badly transcribed name at a far-flung port.

This couple were the witnesses on my great grandfather's marriage certificate in 1885 in King's Lynn Norfolk

I was trying to find them on census records to see if and what the connection to my family might be. He was a sailor, so was my great grandfather, so imagine they may have worked together (he is about 20 years older than my relative so head honcho on ship maybe )

I can find John and Amelia on 1881 1891 1901 and him a widower in 1911 all in Kings Lynn

nothing for 1871, they married (Mar quarter 1870)

can anyone find them in 1871?
