ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Pamela Report 8 Jan 2013 07:09

Ellen was born acc. to census 1851 onwards c.1818 in St.George in the East.
On her marriage record to George Tillcock 1843 All Hallows Tottenham her father is given as William Cannon, Blacksmith and is witnessed by George Conell and Margaret Cannon ?.

Please can you help in finding Ellens birth and parentage in fact more on the Cannon side.
The Tillcock side I have and know that George and Ellen brought up their family in Stanstead, George dying 1889 and Ellen 1898.

Hi Sylvia, thank you for your interest. Ellen always appears in all records, census, marriage and death as such with one exception 'Helen' in 1861.

I have searched Ancestry, Familysearch and London Births and Baptisms but no luck so far.

Chris, thank you also, you have Ellen, George and their family.
What is interesting though is the 1851 census for William and Ann that for some reason I hadn't found, residing Islington Finsbury.
Earlier I had found what I believe is them in 1841 residing St.Botolph, William 50 Head occ. 'smith', Ann 45 both not of County. With them is John 20 and Sarah 14 both born in County.
Now as Ellen and George were married in Tottenham and I believe Islington/Finsbury and Tottenham are pretty close together (I'm in Australia so please forgive If I'm wrong)) this does look promising.

Again I thank you both for your interest and help.

Thanks so much Vera.

I'm just wondering as Ellen always gives her birth place in census as St.George in the East is that anywhere near St.Botolph Aldgate which is where William, Ann,John and Sarah lived in 1841 and where I also have found a Baptism for Sarah b,1826, so that fits, father William occ Whitesmith, mother Ann.

Vera Report 8 Jan 2013 14:18

I also saw the William occupation Whitesmith...whereas she stated her father on her marriage cert., was a blacksmith???

A whitesmith is a person who works with "white" or light-coloured metals such as tin and pewter. Unlike blacksmiths (who work mostly with hot metal), whitesmiths do the majority of their work on cold metal (although they might use a hearth to heat and help shape their raw materials). The term is also applied to metalworkers who do only finishing work – such as filing or polishing – on iron and other "black" metals. Whitesmiths fabricate items such as tin or pewter cups, water pitchers, forks, spoons, and candle holders and it was a common occupation in pre-industrial times.

Am not sure how far St George in the East is from St Botolph's Aldgate. Will check.

St George in the East and St Botolph's Aldgate - the two churches are about a mile apart.

whitesmith and blacksmith are 2 completely separate trades.

I doubt very much that a man would do both, or would switch from one to the other.

I also wondered about that baptism of Eleanor Cannon in 1823, as the age fits with the Ellen Cannon on the 1841 Census.

Now all this is giving me something to get my teeth into isn't it. Regarding the 'smith' part, I wonder if it may come down to whoever was writing the records as in some just the abrev. 'smith' is used and some Black/White.

Possibly Eleanor and Ellen are the same person considering no other Ellen's baptism is apparent.
I will try and follow to see if any 'Eleanor' Cannon shows up in any other records if only to elimate her.

Interesting that St.George and St. Botolph are so close together so could provide the link.

To Vera, Adeline, Sylvia and Dea my grateful thanks for taking an interest and help I will most certainly be following up everything you have provided.
