I've found a few more Rowland Hughes in Liverpool apart from his 2definite children ,Richard rowland Hughes b 1859 is nearest in time.m Elizabeth lived in Cheshire 1911

lancashireAnn Report 11 Mar 2013 17:20

Thomas Rowland Hughes seems to be a reasonably popular name. There was a Welsh poet a sheriff in Louisiana to name but 2 after googling. Can't see anything more though to link the sheriff with you

Mary Report 11 Mar 2013 15:30

Thomas Rowland Hughes Sheriff of Caernarvonshire 1914-Looking for more info before 1891 census and marriage to Margaret in Machynlleth 1884.census say born Liverpool c1848,retired bank manager, prestigious addresses.
I can't find him earlier.I wonder if he is the son of Thomas and Margaret Hughes (davies?)witnesses at marriage 1852 Liverpool of Thomas Davies to Elizabeth Rowlands b Tregaen ,Bangor
He must have worked in Wales and he had an estate in Conway when he was Sheriff.
Please can you find anything? I am intrigued about his middle name Rowland, like 3of Thomas and Elizabeth s children.

lancashireAnn Report 2 Mar 2013 22:15

Birkett / Pickett sounds rather similar - especially as many people could not spell so depending upon what the clerk thought he heard.....

Mary Report 2 Mar 2013 21:12

Baptism of Ann Reilly 1843 gives Jane Birkett.(transcript ). Thanks for your help.

lancashireAnn Report 2 Mar 2013 21:01

the baptisms of both mary jane & richard (1845 & 1847) give Jane's maiden name as Pickett (pigot?)

surname seems to be mainly spelt Riley

lancashireAnn Report 2 Mar 2013 20:33

the nearest I can find is this one

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1842
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
RILEY Bernard PIGOT Jane Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_LP/12/38

spelt Reilly in freebmd

Mary Report 2 Mar 2013 19:50

Please can you find the marriage of Bernard Reilly to Jane birkett in Liverpool c 1840.i believe he was married to first Ellen Evans in 1836 ,children Thomas b 1835 and Martha 1837 and Mary Ann 1839,but I can't find her death .I think he then remarried and had other children with Jane,1851 census Everton includes Thomas and Martha ,Thomas married Mary Sullivan in 1857.
The marriage and death may be in Catholic registers.
Thanks for looking.

Re Thomas rowland Hughes, sheriff,b 1848 Liverpool from 1911 census,m Margaret montgomery in Machynlleth c 1884,could you possibly find his parents please? I am wondering if there is a Rowlands connection to tie him to an illegitimate child ,John Owens wife Ellen.

Mary Report 16 Jan 2013 19:40

Thank you .i will use our library Ancestry to look for birth and census for Elizabeth and possible sister Margaret.

lancashireAnn Report 16 Jan 2013 17:04

the image was on ancestry if you have access

the writing is terrible but I think it says Steward for Owen Rowlands and mariner for Thomas Davies

the witnesses are Thomas and Margaret Hughes

It may be coincidence but there is a marriage of a Thoams Hughes to a Margaret Davies in 1846 in Toxteth Park

Mary Report 16 Jan 2013 16:13

Mary Report 10 Jan 2013 15:32

By the way,I am also researching Thomas Rowland Hughes who was High Sheriff of Caernarfon shire in 1914.there is a male b in Liverpool 1848(1911 census) who could be him.AFamily history claims he was the natural father of Ellen Riley(her son told his daughter who is still alive).i have asked Caernarfon archives for confirmation that the High Sheriff need not be Welsh etc.

Mary Report 10 Jan 2013 15:06

Yes we are looking at the John Owen m Ellen Riley descent. My mistake,Ellen's father was collector on marriage cert.We wondered if canvasser was connected to ships but seems not?John Owen was Master Mariner sailing welsh slate to Australia acc to family story.
