Dear all,

Another family mystery, this time on my Mother's side.

I have been trying to find some information about the above people (Maria and Rose Driscoll). I'm pretty sure they are the children from my great-grandfather's (William Driscoll 1878 - 1945) first marriage.

The story goes that William Driscoll could be quite unpredictable shall we say and when his first wife (who I think may have been Caroline Vine 1881 - 1907) was dying she asked a Nun to take the kids away from him somewhere that he wouldn't know about.

Acting on this information I have managed to find a Maria and Rose Driscoll, born in Stepney, London living in Greenfield Billinge Chapel End in Wigan which seems to be some kind of school or maybe orphanage. However, I seem to have come to a brick wall now.

If there are any living relatives of Rose or Maria who may know of this story, or any nice people out there who are just willing to help, I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

James

Yes thank you I had already found Maria in 1901 and I think I've found Caroline's death being registered in 1904. I'm looking to find out more what happened to Maria and Rose after 1911. Thanks again!

Eringobragh1916 Report 9 Jan 2013 16:03

Greenfields was a Roman Catholic School /orphanage run by the CCPS (Catholic Child Protection Soc.) and the Magdeline Sisters .It became an Approved School in the '70s..still standing..I believe its now called Nugent House Care.?

From various reports over the years..not somehwhere you want to read about if you had family there.

Wigan World website had lots written about it.

Many of the children under the CCPS ended up in Canada.."Home Children"...scheme .
May be worth checking the Data Base....

There was also another child a boy named Joseph...? Could be John mispelled.

They (If this is them) were under the Stepney Board of Guardians and the RC Emig.Soc.
They went out to Canada 1913....
