Have we been able to ascertain what happened to Eliza Lowis Kirk b 1848 who married George Ayre? It would appear that the death mentioned above in 1891 may be incorrect as that Eliza Kirk was married to Moses Ayre.

The Eliza Lowis Kirk who died in 1928 is a different (but related) Eliza Kirk.

Thanks for this great information. I too am researching this family and trying to find what happened to Alfred Kirk Born 1873 to Eliza Louis Kirk and unknown father in Cambridgeshire. I agree this death in 1889 seems unlikely given the father's name.

Any other suggestions for Alfred much appreciated.

Thanks - the other two bits I am working on are ELiza's son Alfred's death (this could be him)and where Jemmina (ELiza Lowis Kirk's sister went. She was born in 1838 and married Matthew Cutting. They have several children but then don't appear and I havent been able to find immigration records for them.

My apologies for not including ELiza's middle name which is as you have found "Lowis" - I have also found some variations such as Lowess and Louis. The two ELiza Lowis Kirks in my family are the one born in 1968 with Gabriel as her eldest and later married to George Ayre (we know this from documents belonging to Gabriel Kirk) and her niece, Eliza Lowis Kirk, daughter of ELiza's brother John Lowis Kirk. Kirk seems to have been a common name around the area.

Thank you for finding Ada Ayre and Emily Ayre. That suggests to me that Eliza stayed in England. Just need to find nw when she died.

Hi Everyone

Thank you for your quick and comprehensive responses. In answer to Reggie's question re Gabriel travelling alone - I have been unable to evidence of any other member of the family travelling with him. Also, there are many family stories and photos stil around from soon after the time he arrived in Rockhampton and no mention of any siblings or parents. Gabriel married Lois Essex in Rockhampton in 1895 and many of the family lived to an old age and stayed in the area. My 92 year old Dad remembers Gabriel but no other family members. However, I still have not discounted the possibility. ELaine
