Have you found him on any census records?

How did you work back to him?

Remember that age at death isn't on the GRO index until the mid-1860's

Thanks for all the info

Matilda Culley remarried using this name to John Able before 1837.
Charles and Matilda's children can be seen in 1841 census with Able so she is the correct Matlda. Therefore Charles may have died prior to 1837. He may have been killed or simply left Matilda.
His place of birth is unknown or the date of his birth.

There are some Culley's in Purton (Wiltshire). I researched the children of Pheobie Culley and all of the children were born in Purton including a Charles Culley. They all married and were buried in Purton except Charles. He wasn't married there and he isn't buried there. It's a tenuous link but??

Reggie

Most interested in the marriage of Ann Culley in 1847 father Charles Culley.

Thanks for this. I am certain that Matilda remarried to John Able before 1837.She marreid as Matilda Culley

I assumed Charles had died so the marriage record you have highlighted makes me think again.

Don't assume because the father's name was on the marriage cert it means he was definitely alive - it all depends on how the question was asked. If simply asked for name and occupation of father, the bride might have stated what he was, before he died, and not mentioned that he was deceased, because that question wasn't specifically asked.

If this is the marriage of William Culley who was with Matilda Able in 1841...

Name: William Culley - baker
Age: Full Age
Spouse Name: Mary Ann Harvey
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 10 Aug 1856
Parish: St Pancras Parish Chapel
Borough: Camden
Father Name: Charles Culley - dead <<<<<<<<< no occupation given
Spouse Father Name: Henry Harvey - wheelwright
Register Type: Parish Register

Looks like it was:

Census 1861:

Address: 71, Cotton Street, Poplar County: London

CULLEY, William Head Married M 31 1830 Greengrocer
..., Kent ( on image looks like Knockholt)
CULLEY, Mary Ann Wife Married F 31 1830 Eltham, Kent
CULLEY, Sarah Ellen Daughter F 4 1857 Burnley, Kent
CULLEY, Mary Daughter F 1 1860 Poplar, Middlesex
ABEL, Emily Sister Unmarried F 24 1837 No Occupation
..., Kent
ABEL, William Youree Nephew M 2 1859 Knockholt, Kent
KIMBLE, Eliza Niece F 15 1846 Scholar Elham, Kent

I think the young nephew is William James Abel on the actual image.

The register for the marriage of Ann to George Humble does not mark her father as deceased.

The marriage that Reggie posted of Ann Culley to George Humble is definitely that of the right Ann, as they have an Able sister in law visiting them in 1851, and Ann is born in Knockholt:

Address: Elmstead Cottage, Bromley County: Kent

HUMBLE, George Head Married M 24 1827 Gardener Eltham, Kent
HUMBLE, Ann Wife Married F 25 1826 Knockholt, Kent<<<<<<
HUMBLE, Henry Son M 3 1848 Eltham, Kent
HUMBLE, Eliza Daughter F 3 1848 Eltham, Kent
HUMBLE, George Son M 0 (7 MOS) 1851 Bromley, Kent
ABLE, Matilda Sister-In-Law F 12 1839 Visitor Knockholt, Kent<<<<<

Hi .Don't think I can help you as I do not know much about my family as I am only just beginning to research my mothers side . My mother was a Culley . Her father was a Charles Culley and he was married to my grandmother Ann . They had Four children my mother Elsie, Ann , John and Charles . All the males worked in the print on the newspapers in Fleet Street and Shoe Lane , London . They came from Newington , Lambeth and around these areas . One of my grandmothers sisters married one of my grandfather Charles brothers . So two sisters married two Culley brothers . Maybe this is of some help . Regards Patricia .
