Samuel Hambly abt 1831 St Austell

Carolyn Report 14 Jan 2013 20:14

I'm trying to find out what happened to my great, great grandfather Samuel Hambly and have hit a solid brick wall!
I know that he was born in St Austell, Cornwall in about 1831 according to the 1841 and 1851 censuses although by 1861 his birth was 1833!
I have his marriage certificate and know that he married Elizabeth Vivian 11 Oct 1851 at Parr, St Austell. His father was listed as Joseph Hambly.
I can't find Samuel in the 1871 census. Elizabeth is listed as the head of the family but her occupation is Tin Miners Wife - suggesting that Samuel is still alive.
By 1881 Elizabeth is widowed, has moved to Widnes and is living on her own although other family members are nearby.
The last child Rachel who is my great grandmother was born in 1865. Samuel is named on her birth certificate.
I haven't been able to find a christening or death for Samuel even checking different variations on the spelling of Hambly. I've gone through the BMD records with a fine tooth comb between 1865 - 1881 without success. There were a couple of possible deaths that looked hopeful but the certificates proved them wrong.
I've wondered if Samuel emigrated as I know many tin miners did. Unfortunately I've had no success with that idea either. Other family members went to Australia and USA but not during the time I'm looking at.
I have my great grandmother's Bible. She has recorded the births and deaths of her siblings and also her mother's and grandmother's deaths. The strange thing is that there is no mention of her father.
Samuel seems to have vanished after 1871 - I've now run out of ideas about where to look. Please has anyone got any inspirations???

Hi safc
Unfortunately this isn't the correct Samuel. According to his marriage certificate his father was Joseph and I think his mother was Catherine (or possibly Caroline) Borlase

Found a marriage for Joseph to Caroline/Catharine Borlace 5 may 1822 St Austell. They had

Ann 1823
Jane 1825
Joseph 1828
Elizabeth 1832

Cannot find any more for them - possibly moved somewhere else or register stops at 1832 (online)

On;y other possible

Samuel 19 jan 1825(bit early???) Wesleyan, St Austell, son of Joseph and Jennifer Callings.

Hi trailertrash
That's the marriage I have.
The children I'd found were
Ann 1823
Grace 1826
Joseph 1828
Elizabeth 1832
John1835
Ann, Grace, Elizabeth and John are with father Joseph in 1841 census. Samuel is in the census submitted by safc living I think with his uncle.

think that is highly likely - Hambly, Hartley, I have had far stranger variant spellings in my family.

Hi safc
That birth sounds very promising. It all fits apart from the slight variation on the surname. I'll have a look to see if there was also a Hartley family in the area a the time. If not I think this may be the one.
Thank you

Hi Carolyn,

The Cornwall Parish Records are very well covered on the LDS site, you can actually trawl through the images which might help to rule some of them in or out.
I'm still looking for a lady I thought would be buried in St Austell and there is no Death Cert for her either.

Edit : am too slow as usual!

Kind regards
Amanda

That could easily be Hambley rather than Hartley. There is no Samuel Hartley in the Cornish area in 1841 or 1851 censuses. Hartley seems to be a northern surname rather than Cornish so I think this is definitely the one.
I've been trying to trace this birth for about five years in the transcribed records. I hadn't realised that the originals were now online!
A big thank you for that.
