Question from a New Zealander who knows nothing about English laws etc. I have Ancestors married in England in 1821, would the Marriage Certificate at that time state the bride and grooms parents?

There would not be a certificate .

The issue of certs did not start until July 1837, when the GRO came into being.

For events prior to that date, there will only be a Parish Register - it will contain the names of the couple marrying, those of the witnesses, and that of the vicar who performed the ceremony.

English/Welsh marriage certs contain only the names of each of the fathers.......if known. Mothers' names are not recorded in England/Wales

Hi Rosemary,
Try this site http://www.freereg.org.uk I have found a couple of records I needed but there are many counties that are not covered unfortuately. Also try
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm

You might be able to find the birth of your ancestors on this, but you will need to know where they were born, and if listed it should give the parents.
