any chance of discovering where Henry died? UK or USA?

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 19 Jan 2013 23:02

Ann,
I am becoming confused about this family and wonder if separate families are being mixed up
So far:
Henry John Boulton and Marion Jack Riddick married in 1900
At 1901 they were living in Coleford, Monmouthshire and had no children
At 1911, Marion is in the workhouse, married 11 yrs and had 2 living children called Lily ( age7) and Harry. (age5)
There is no trace of her husband at this point, but he fits the profile of a man who returned from Boston to the UK in Sep 1909. This man was a chauffeur and travelling alone.

In 1915, a child named Elizabeth M Boulton is registered in Monmouth, mothers name: Reddick
In 1916 a child is named Doris W is registered in Chepstow, Glamorgan, mothers name Reddick.

However, the birth of the child named Montague Napier M Boulton was registered in Monmouthshire in 1901..
There is no mother's name on the Anc record but he cannot be the child of Henry and Marion... she had only 2 children at 1911
A child named Montague Wilson Boulton is registered in London 1907. No mothers surname
Another child named Montague Alfred Boulton is reistered in Bristol 1907. No mother's surname.

Who are Monty and Maud that you refer to on your thread? Where did the info come from?

Can't help with deaths of either Henry or Marion but Henry John Boutlton was the Son of Henry William Boulton and Jane Woollen.
This couple also had a son named William Samuel Boulton and this man lived in Canada.
It was his parents who visited him in 1924!

just looked back through - Monty must be Montague

Elizabeth was born 1915 Doris Winifred was 1916. She went into the workhouse in Sept 16th 1910 and came out in April 1911. Henry went to America came back in 1909, then emigrated in 1910 with Maud and Monty. Came back into Liverpool, but don't know when he first went or from where. would like a marriage certificate for Henry and Marion, Marion's death certificate and info on Henry going to America and what month he returnd in 1910

Hi Ann,
I still can't see how the child called Monty or Montague could be the son of Henry and Marion.
The only potential child was born in Monmouthshire in 1901.
He would be 9yrs old at the time of the 1911 census

At 1911 Marion states she had just two children, both living and both in the workhouse with her. They were Lily age 7 and Harry. age 5

At 1910, how could her husband have emigrated with TWO other children?
I cannot see how either Monty or Maud could be theirs.
I am not 100% certain that Elizabeth b1915 and Doris b 1916 were their children either.
Their surname was Boulton and their mother's name was Reddick,. Even if this was Marion J Riddick, who was the father????

Are you sure that there is no confusion with another Henry Boulton?
It was a fairly common name in Gloucestershire.

Which child is your friend a descendant of?

Mmmm,
I did find a 1910 emigration from Liverpool to New York for a man called Harry Boulton, and his family who arrived NY 8 Jan 1910
This family were enroute to Pennsylvania

They were from the North East of England.
This Harry Boulton was a printer and 10yrs older than Henry John Boulton
Wife was called Edith, and their children were Frederick Harry age 17 , and Lillias aged 11.

It appears that Henry John Boulton did emigrate to the US in 1910.
Montague is his son and is found in Canada 1911 with Henry's married sister.

In the US at 1920 and 1930 Montague is found to be with his father
The entire family have changed their last name, and is the reason that I could not locate them before.

PM sent to Cameron with all the info

Hi Ann.....
I am gobsmacked!
I was sooo sceptical about this and could not see how the info could possibly be right
Henry and Maud not only emigrated....they changed their last name!
So did Monty.

Apologies from me to you both .

Anne - Re "The entire family have changed their last name, and is the reason that I could not locate them before."

I don't really understand what you're on about - Lucy's changed her name from Boulton to Woodhouse, but this was quite normal for women upon marriage.
I hardly think a respelling of Boulton as Bolton by the enumerator counts as a change of name - more like a not unexpected consequence of the difference in the ways the censuses were administered.

In the UK, from 1841 on, the enumerator would drop off a blank form a few days before census Sunday for the householder to fill in, then collect the completed forms on the Monday (or maybe Tuesday) and check them over and maybe help fill in forms for folk who had difficulties. An enumerator never had more than 15 miles on his walk.

Even though literacy was higher in Canada than the UK at that time, it wasn't a practicable way of conducting Canadian (or US) censuses (NB All our h/h over age 7 could read & write). The difference in population density meant that some Canadian districts assigned over 500 sq miles to be covered by 1 man. Clearly then, the best way to handle this is to go to the house and collect the data on the door step (or kitchen table, more like). It takes longer to collect the data, but the big factor here is saving one round of travel time on his "walk".

So the enumerator respelled Boulton as Bolton - big deal.
