John & Sarah's gravestone

David

David Report 19 Jan 2013 00:48

The only children from John & Sarah that I have not found graves for (in Tasmania) are the two girls Sarah Holcrow and Jeanette Holcrow, both born 1835 in Middlesex prior to John being deported (1837).

In the light of the fuller details that you have posted David, I don't think that any of the information on the other thread was your family - so probably not worth copying it over.

Do you think that any of John and Sarah's children stayed / came to the UK?

I think that the MI that you have is for this John Fletcher?

1851

Name: John Fletcher
Age: 49
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1802
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth Fletcher
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Fulham, Middlesex, England

Civil parish: Twickenham
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Street Address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Disability: View image

Registration district: Brentford
Sub-registration district: Isleworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 2e
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 84
Piece: 1698
Folio: 522
Page Number: 25
Household Members: Name Age
John Fletcher 49
Elizabeth Fletcher 48
Emily Smith 57

John's "occupation" is recorded as "from houses and interest on money"

I think that the Sarah buried with him is second wife.

I don't think the the MI you have is your family.

So should I copy all the info over to this thread and delete the other?

David, I think that only you can delete the thread? There was nothing on it to breach GR terms and conditions.

Now here we have Vera looking up the information that has already been posted.

No I didn't delete the thread, but after learning a bit more about posts, I realised it may be deleted for me. I have copied it in it's entirety.
It was very useful, albeit I am still unsure if I have the correct John and Sarah.
I need to find out if they actually did go back to the UK.

David

Please tell me that you haven't deleted the other thread where I posted the census details showing that Emily Smith was John Fletcher's sister!!

Also the probate details for john, Sarah and Emily were on that thread.

I may have originally posted my request in the wrong section, so am now starting again!

I am trying to trace my great, great, great grandfather John Fletcher and his wife Sarah (nee Kelly).
i have recently successfully traced their descendants in Tasmania.

My great grandfather was:
Henry Edward ("Harry") Fletcher
Born 30/1/1872 at Port Sorrell, Tasmania
Married Alice Tempest 27/4/1899 at Strahan, Tasmania
Died 5/9/1908 & buried at Lyell, Queenstown, Tasmania

Henry's father was Arthur Fletcher
Born 15/07/1844 at Campbell Town, Tasmania
Married Annie Clarke 27/1/1880 at Port Sorrell, Tasmania
Died 10/08/1917 & buried with his wife at Latrobe Cemetry

Arthur's father was John Fletcher
Born c1799 around Middlesex
Married Sarah Kelly 14/6/1821 in New Brentford, Middlesex
Two children (possible twins) in 1835 Sarah Holcrow & Jeanet Holcrow)
Transported to Tasmania 15/4/1837 "for life" after being convicted (Bedford Quarter Session) of killing a deer

Not sure when Sarah (& children??) arrived in Tasmania, however they had a further 3 children with only Arthur surviving.

My assumption is that John & Sarah emigrated back to the UK sometime after John received a pardon.
This is only based on the gravestone i have found in the Municipal Cemetry, Twickenham, Middlesex with correct dates and in the area they orginally lived.

The headstone reads from the top:
John Fletcher died March 11 1879 aged 80 years
Also of Sarah, widow of John Fletcher died February 28th 1894 aged 93
Also Emily Smith dIed October 26th 1873 aged 85

Obviously Emily was buried first, followed by John, then Sarah. I am assuming the gravestone was erected after Sarah's death????
Not sure if Emily is a relative, perhaps John's elder sister??

There appears to be very few records between 1844 & 1879 showing shipping arrivals into London from Australia.

Is anyone able to verify my assumption that John & Sarah returned to their homeland?

Kiind regards,
David
