I have a death cert for a Francis Conmy. In the name of the deceased section it shows Frances with the e crossed through and i added. Against the alteration is recorded (17). Similarly in the informant's name box the informant is shown as son (18) stepson on this occassion there is no crossing through. |

Well the amendment to the first name is because the deceased was male and the name originally spelt was the female version. The 17 would refer to the file nos in a separate entry book as a cross reference |

The registrar keeps his own index of corrections he has made to certificates. The numbers next to the corrections are the numbers he will have in his index (like a list of every correction he has made to every certificate he has issued). I doubt that these are available for the public to see. |

The reasons for the changes on the cert are self-evident |

Thank you all for your response. I have all the information that everybody has added . My reason for the original enquiry was to find out if the numbers were numbers given to the corrections which may be then separately logged and may hold further clues. Looking for the birth parents of F A Conmy. |

It looks as though he was born before Margaret Barry married Frank Conmy. |

Margaret's surname is still in question, could be Barry or Berry although her names are Margaret Maud (taken from the death record of her son Robert Owen Conmy). |

Have you looked for a marriage for the parents named on the 1883 cert? |

1891 census shows three sons born before the marriage |

I wouldn't place too much reliance on the added second forename for Margaret...............no indication anywhere else that it existed |
