I am an adoptee who tried searching many years ago (before computer) for my birth mother. As I am new to computer searches I would like some advice on how to proceed or any help that is available. I know the following.

Birth Mother's name and address (which was in Boothstown, Manchester). I was told previously that this area was destroyed in the war so what do I search under as I am wondering if records were also destroyed.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Teresa have you contacted the authoritys with regards to going on a register .. not sure of the exact details but i think this way if any is searching for you and vice versa they can arrange the necesary support

Would you like to put some details on here and we could try to help you ?

You have to be careful though about info on living people.

What sort of dates are we looking at?

Local Social Services should have your adoption records which you are entitled to see.

Welcome to the boards Teresa.
Mark is right - if you haven't already you can put your details on the National Adoption Register in case other family members are searching for you. Just google it.
I take it you have your adoption file, given that you have an address?
It might pay you to check out the electoral register for the address pre-war - do you live locally? This will give you names of all people of voting age living there.
Is your mother's name a common one or is it reasonably unusual? No need to put on here obviously.

All that has been posted is good advice.

About two years ago I provided some assistance to someone who was looking for her daughter. (She knew that I was ‘into all this computer search stuff’). That was the reverse to your situation. But, based on that case, herewith some further thoughts:-

[Probably best if you do not respond to them on here]

Did you apply for her details, or were they passed on by a friend/relation? If those details are ‘unofficial’, are you certain that they are correct?

Do you know whether the surname that you have for her is her maiden one or a married one?

Are you just curious about her? And, therefore, your roots? Or if you do find out more about her, will you try to make contact?

You state that the address that you have for her was destroyed in the war? That sort of sets a lower age limit for you, as WWII finished in 1945? 68yrs ago. If that assumption is correct, your mother, if she is still alive, is most likely in her 80’s/90’s

First of all let me thank you all for your replies. I put my name on the Adoption Contact Register in 1994. I am assuming this is the same register. I have my original birth certificate showing my birth mother's name and address. At that time the agency helping me search purchased a birth certificate dated 1926 of someone they thought could be my birth mother and I believe purchased other certificates to no avail. The last thing I tried at that time was an advertisement in a local paper with no response. I realize that my birth mother if she is still living would be in her late 80's but I would like to contact her if she is still alive and willing to be contacted. If not I would like to have some information on my birth family history. While I had a wonderful adoptive family there has always been a feeling with me of something missing and with my current family now having two new adoptive grandchildren it has brought these feeling to the surface again. I live in Canada so I am not familiar with the Manchester area so I am not sure which region I should be searching under. Again many thanks for your help.
