Hi can anyone please help me. My great Grandfather x3 went to America along with his wife Eliza and two children whilst out in America they went onto have 2 more girls
born in Philadelphia. They appear on the 1951 English census So from about 1844 to 1851 must have arrived back in the Uk. I cannot find them on a return trip from the states and can not seem to find them whilst there are in America.
Many thanks Karen :-)

UK Incoming passenger lists only start from 1878 so we're not likely to find their return, I'm afraid....

Just posting a different version of 1851 which shows all of the birthplaces:

LAND, Richard Head Married M 36 1815 Rail Porter Matlock Bath, Derbyshire
LAND, Eliza Wife Married F 36 1815 Manchester
LAND, William Son Unmarried M 11 1840 Scholar Bollington, Cheshire
LAND, Lydia Daughter Unmarried F 9 1842 Scholar U S America
LAND, Eliza Daughter Unmarried F 7 1844 Scholar U S America
LAND, Elizabeth Daughter Unmarried F 2 1849 Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire

Piece: 1747 Folio: 389 Page: 45
Registration District: Peterborough
Civil Parish: Saint John Baptist
Municipal Borough: Peterborough

Address: Albert Place, Saint John Baptist, Peterborough County: Northamptonshire

(Other daughter Sarah is in service with the Slaughter family in Wisbech)

So they could only have been in the US 1840 to 1849 maximum, so probably in between US census..

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jan 2013 19:14

A possibilty:

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

Name: Richard Land
Arrival Date: 8 Dec 1841
Birth Date: abt 1814
Age: 27
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Alfred

This one's a book-keeper.

He's travelling with Elizabeth (29), Sarah (4) and William (2).

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jan 2013 19:18

I think that passenger list has got to be them when compared to the 1841:

LAND, Richard M 25 1816
LAND, Elizabeth F 25 1816
LAND, Sarah F 4 1837 Cheshire
LAND, William M 1 1840 Cheshire

Piece: 104 Book/Folio: 5/4 Page: 3
Registration District: Macclesfield
Civil Parish: Prestbury

Address: Moss Yard, Prestbury, Bollington County: Cheshire

Richard's occupation looks like M S (Male Servant?)

This is definitely the family going to US. Richard and Elizabeth born out of county which fits the 1851. Son William born Cheshire which also fits the 1851.

Karen-Marie Report 24 Jan 2013 20:05

Yes thats the correct one in cheshir. later on he worked for the railways then went onto be a station master in London. Still a mystery why he went to America and why he did not stay.many thanks :-D

Karen-Marie Report 24 Jan 2013 20:13

The marriage is the correct one many thanks. Another strange thing is Both Richard and Eliza died very close together Richard left eveything to Eliza and 1 other then when Eliza died it was left to Elizabeth as it as her down as only next of kin. Yet Lydia was still alive. Not sure about the others. I think William went back to America.
