Find Ancestors

Please may someone help.

Jane Marshall (1836) Dunbartonshire daughter of Robert Marshall (?) and Mary Aitken (?) I can't find them on Scottish census for 1841 or 1851.

Jane Marshall later marries James McGurron (an) Irishman and appears in various censi including 1881/91 census in Leeds as Jane McGurron. She had about 11 children with James, names including Bertha (1866), William (1868), Jane (1870), Robert (1872). She died in 1905 in Bramley Leeds.

I am trying to trace her Scottish ancestry.

Thomas, where did you get her parents names from if you haven't found her on census?

Do you have marriage certificate to confirm her father's name? If not, when/where did they marry?

Have you looked for records on Scotland's People?

The names of her parents have come from many trees on ancestry and genesreunited.co.uk. James McGurron married Jane Marshall in 1858, I do not have the certificate sorry.

Could you post the 1881 or 1891 census , please?

Tom, do please bear in mind that people on both sites (and particularly Ancestry) glibly copy data from each other's trees without checking if it's right. One person puts wrong data, they all have wrong data.

Always verify the info with certificates or other records as far as possible.

None have a marriage date for this couple.
The marriage year is based on age of eldest child
I did a search on SP and could not find the marriage.

Thanks for looking it up. I am aware of ancestry's domino effect with data. It was a big family. I could not find Jane Marshall and James McGurron's marriage on bmd I do think it was from Scotland as the McGurron family went to Scotland first before making their way to England. However they had their first child, James in 1858 so I had to guess from there.

Tom, it's quite likely that they never did marry each other, a lot of couples didn't like to trouble the vicar!

Perhaps one of them was already married to someone else?

Is there any document that states where in Scotland Jane Marshall was born?
So far 1871-1891 censuses say... Scotland.
Why do you think she came from Dunbartonshire?

IF ( big if) James and Jane followed the traditional naming pattern, it suggests that Jane's parents would be called John and Margaret ( 1st daughter and 2nd son)
