Unknown Report 26 Jan 2013 22:38

The Army records for My ancester John Adams record that he was born in the parish of St Margarets in or near the town of St Margaret Suffolk in 1795

He is in the Royal hospital Chelsea when the 1861 was taken and his place of birth is transribed by Ancestry as Witcham Suffolk.

I have googled St Margarets Suffolk but get various hits for St Margarets parishs in Suffolk the nearest sounding name to this in Suffolk is Wickham but the parish church is St Andrews. There is a Witcham in Cambrideshire but the parish church is St Martins,
Does anyone know if there was a town or village called St Margarets in Suffolk at at fhis time.

Thanks in advance
Steve

I am having the same problem as you finding a St Margarets Suffolk as a town.

I know mistakes were made on census....but when he was discharged from the army he was a sergeant....on the 1861 he is down as a private.

I agree with Jude. I think the birthplace on the 1861 census says Wrentham.

So if the army record is correct, then the John Adams as a Chelsea Pensioner as possibly not him (because of the rank). Which then muddies the waters - if Wrentham is correct - as we also have a John Adams in Wrentham in 1861...which suggests there could be two of them :-S

How have you got back to him?

Re place of birth Wrentham.....just a thought......

The Church of St Margaret

The village of Reydon lies to the north of the town of Southwold. The three roads from Wangford, Wrentham and Halesworth converge at Reydon corner about 100 metres from where Mights Bridge crosses over Buss Creek, which provides the only road bridge entry to Southwold.

Reydon Church
The parish church is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch. It is situated on the B1126 Wangford Road, to the north west of the village. One of the most striking features is a large, unnamed bronze angel inscribed "To Fanny my beloved wife." The present building is mainly from the early 14th century. The tower was built about 1325. The chancel was made more elaborate in the 15th century, and has many niches for saints in the window splays. The church suffered damage during the Reformation and the Civil War and was much altered in succeeding centuries.[11][12][13]

On the 1861 he is described as married. Who was his wife?

Wow thanks for all the replies

According to his Army record he fought at the Battle of New Orleans and was pensioned off in 1833 due to rheumastism. In 1841 he is the barrack sergant at Sheffield barracks his wife Catherine and children also live at the barracks.
I cant find him in the 1851 census but his in 1851 his wife is a house Keeper for a Mr John Hooper she records herself as married.

His Army records show he was admitted to the pensioners on 1st Jan 1861 which fits with the 1861 census. He was discharged on the 1st July 1862 "to live with his children" so perhaps his marriage had broken down..

The hospital recorded all patients as private in that box this refers to his position in the instutution no the ranks they held in the Army.
The John Adams born in Wretham 26 Nov 1794 appears in the 1861 still living in Wrentham so this rules him out but thanks for all your help.
