I'm researching my great grandmother Mary Agnes Wray's first husband. They married 1869, and in 1871 Census are recorded as living at 7 Byrom St, Liverpool, with 5 month old son Walter William. William is a licenced victualler.I can't understand how in 1873 he died of typhus in the Liverpool Workhouse (I believe I have the right death record, although his age appears to be two years out, but he is recorded as a licenced victualler.) Can anyone help? Thanks |

Workhouses also operated as local hospitals |

K is quite right. Many of our older hospitals (including the one where I work!) started as workhouses, and as K says served as the local hospital too. |

Thank you all very much, such a relief to find that William wasn't necessarily an inmate of the workhouse. |
