	So he died in Cumbria but his daughter thinks he was born elsewhere? If you apply for a marriage certificate you will get his father's name, which will help in identification. Added: Think you will definitely need it, as I cannot see a birth for him on free bmd or in 1911 census as Thomas Lewis Dalby.

	I wonder if he was born with the surname Lewis? Both daughters seem to have Lewis as their second forenames..........

	Thomas Lewis Dalby married 1st in Scotland in 1941 to Isabella Laidlaw / Laidlow Isabella died in Cockermouth 50y Jun Q 1965 Scottish cert 's have a lot more info. -- you really do need to get a marriage cert. A child of that 1st marriage lives in Moor Road , Stainburn , Workington , Cumbria Mavis

	As Mavis says you need to order that marriage certificate as it will give his mother's name. Even if he was illegimate and gives a "made up" name for his father on that, he is likely to give the true name of his mother.
