It seems strange that Thomas Shield would have his son with the family in 1851 if the son was the product of an affair. His wife must have been very understanding!!.

I think I would be inclined to buy the 1849 birth certificate and see if that Thomas is illegitimate and see what his mother's name actually is. It's the only likely birth I can see for a Thomas H. Robson in Newcastle, although of course as early as 1849 his birth may not have been registered.
