My dream would be to find the birth/baptism of my gggrandfather Robert Pinkney born 1825 - 1827 The census's list him as follows
1851 born Tudhoe, living Harton, miner, with wife Jane Telford and son John
1861 born Durham, living Harton miner, with Jane
1871 born Fullwell living Harton, miner, with Jane and 7 children
1881 born Tudhoe living Harton, miner, with Jane and 5 children
Robert died in 1890
He was married 1850 and his father named as John
I have a feeling that the following is Robert
1841 Robert b. 1826 Durham, agricultural labourer and lodger with Margaret Dickinson at Old Park Auckland St Andrew
Myself and others have been searching a number of years now with no luck,.so am stuck. Would love to know which John is his dad and who him mother was

Well, too early for a birth record

What was his father's occupation?

Have you visited the County Records Office?

On marriage cert. Robert is a coal miner, address Harton Colliery, father John Pinkney, coal miner.
Jane Telford address ditto Harton Colliery, father John Telford coal miner.
married at Holy Trinity Church, South Shields, Durham
Wittnesses...William Rutter and Sarah Rutter

Amazed at quick response to my query.
Yes I did spend a morning in Durham Records Office while there for an army reunion, but found it hard going. Didnt know where to start and not allowed to take in any notes. Wasted an hour before I asked at the desk for info on how to look for records. Live on Isle of Bute so a bit of a journey for me. Think I need a week there.
A fellow researcher came up with the following, which does sound feasible.
1841 Census. John Pinkney, Agricultural labourer (b. 1800 Durham) and Ann (b. 1801, but not in Durham.
Children: Mary b. 1827 Durham, John b. 1834 Durham
Address: Redworth, Heighington, Nr. Newton Aycliffe

1841 Census. Robt Pinkney, b. 1826, Durham, agricultural labourer and lodger with Margaret Dickinson at Old Park, Auckland St. Andrew (now part of Bichop Auckland) and possibly working for farmer Joseph Kirtley, who had an adjacent farm.
N.B. Redworth and Auckland St Andrew are only 3 miles apart

Lewis (1848) says:
TUDHOE, a township, in the parochial chapelry of Whitworth...
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND
has an (unindexed) collection of interest, viz:
England, Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts ca., 1700-1900

You can browse the images for Whitworth (and Brancepeth) there.

NB The BTs tend to be less complete than the Old Parish Registers in this diocese.

Thank you kindly for your help I will follow up some of the leads and see where it gets me. I suppose there is every possibility that Roberts records have not been transcriibed yet or even that they have been destroyed
