Does anyone know if its possible to get a marriage certificate pre 1837? I need to confirm they are the right relatives but I need to see the marriage certificate . The marriage was in 1834 and in Kensington so are there any other archives that hold the info?

No marriage certs as such (they only started with civil registration in 1837) but some London records are available on line.

If you care to post the names you are looking for, then people on the boards can do a lookup for you.

Some of the London ones on Ancestry for 1836 are the same as the ones issued in 1837 but very hit and miss and certainly not for 1834

Thanks
I am trying to confirm that William Hammond who married Sarah Robinson who married on 30th Oct 1834 in Kensington are the parents of Henry Hammond born 1843. Sarah died in 1843 and I am presuming in child birth. I cannot find any thing on Henry in the 1851 /1861 census's and so a bit stuck. This is a bit aof educated guess work but as yet cant prove anything

Why not buy Henry's birth cert and see if his mother was Sarah nee Robinson

Is this him ?

Do you mean this Henry ?

Mother's Name: Sarah Hammond

Register Type: Parish Registers

Susan

Susan Report 5 Feb 2013 23:39

Yes I may well do that. I saw Henry Hunter John but I am not convinced its the correct Henry. I am not aware of the Hunter John bit in the history of the family. However there are no other Henry Hammonds registered in Kensington.

As you say getting the certificate will either eliminate or add some interesting info

So he can't have been born 1843 if baptised in 1842.

So maybe ....

Hi GlitterBaby

I will check it out. I have always had the info as 1843 and Kensington but its definitely possible it was registered as 1842. Not convinced though.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Feb 2013 23:50

Is Henry (1843) your direct line?

If so, his marriage cert will include details of his father.

Until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births.................

A marriage record will not confirm a person's parents............it can't

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Feb 2013 23:51

The woman who died in 1843 should appear on 1841 census, and her death cert should say whose wife she was

Thank you all so far. There is something very strange as there is just nothing concrete to work from.. I have all the info for my Henry who married Harriett Seal and then all the way down to my grandmother but absolutely and frustratingly nothing before his bith. No parents and no siblings. Only presumptions

What are the details about his father on the marriage cert?

Susan

Susan Report 5 Feb 2013 23:55

Reggie
Yes he is . He is my gt gt grandfather. I will get a copy of the marriage cert.

On the 1841 it shows a sarah and William living together and at that stage 2 children - Ellesabeth and William aged 7 and 2
