In reply to Reggie, I have a copy of the Ancestry census report for John Breed age 8 yr, from the 1861 census. If you perform the search under his name, estimated year of birth 1853. Relation(to head of house) grandson. Mother's name Ann Wright. Gender male, where born, Wendling, Norfolk, England, etc. The 1861 England census clearly stated MOTHER'S NAME : ANN WRIGHT. This appearing on the census has caused me confusion, but you are in error in stating the census doesn't give the mothers name, as in this instance it does. I made no assumption about this, and as it would appear Ann Wright,(maiden name Breed) was not the mother of John Bennington Breed, but his aunt, the addition of her name as his mother on the census has in fact caused some confusion. |

There is nothing on the census return to say who the child's mother is. |

Try NorfolkFHS .........or the County Records Office, if you have not already done so. |

It is always worth remembering that although civil registration began in England in 1837 it was not until 1874 that none registration of a birth was punishable. Consequently many births went unregistered. |

I am trying to find a record of the birth of John Breed, shown in the 1861 census as age 8 years, son of Ann Wright (maiden name Ann Harriet Breed) born Wendling, Norfolk. This would place his birth as about 1853 but so far I have totally failed to find records of his birth or baptism. In Later census and Marriage records he appears as John Bennington Breed. His Marriage certificate shows no details of who his father was. This man was my husbands great grandfather so if anyone can help with information on this I'd be most grateful. |
