Findingmypast Report 7 Feb 2013 13:31

Searching for info. on emigration + deaths of Thomas Mason (a farmer) & four of his sons who emigrated from England to Canada between 1861 England census & 1871 Canada census.

Thomas (born ca.1817 Ashby Parva, Leicestershire), his sons (born in Newton,Warks. & Ullesthorpe,Leics.) :
Alfred (1846), William (1849), John Jabez (1852 - died 1921 in York, Ontario), Edwin (1856), Walter Cosford (1858).

Thomas (widowed early 1858) is living with second wife Alinda G. Mason (born England ca.1830) + five sons in Trafalgar, Halton County, Ontario on 1871 census...although i can't find a record of the marriage.

Thomas + Alinda are living in Burlington, Halton County, Ontario on 1881 census.

John Jabez lived + died in York, Ontario, but i can't find out what became of Alfred, Edwin or Walter Cosford Mason.

William Mason & his family are on 1901 census in Assiniboia, NWT (Saskatchewan).

**** i should add that these are not my relatives - i am posting for a close friend without computer access.

Many thanks for any help or suggestions !

Dear Rootgatherer,

Many thanks for the info. !
That must be Thomas' death - he does describe himself as a 'gentleman' on 1881 census & everything else fits nicely.

Also, thankyou for the marriage details to Alinda.
Her parents were believed to be Samuel + Mary Pratt but without any proof to backup the assumption i didn't feel right in posting that info. here.

Best Wishes
Roy

Hello mgnv

Many thanks for the extra information re: the Mason family, your help is most appreciated !
I've only just returned to the thread today, hence the delay in thanking you.

Although we already have the info. re: death of John Jabez Mason in 1921 plus William's children, it was the deaths of Thomas Mason, his wife Alinda & the other four sons that we were hoping to find...possibly their marriages also.

Rootgatherer found Thomas' death in 1887 + marriage to Alinda in 1868 (which i couldn't find) & also the death of Alfred in 1899 & Walter in 1941.

The deaths of William Mason & his brother Edwin are still eluding us, as well as their stepmother Alinda - who could have married husband number three after Thomas Mason's death in 1887 (she was still only 56 yrs. old).

My friend also wishes to pass-on her thanks to you both, as our expectations in finding anything more on the family were very low - especially with our understanding of Canadian records being very hard to access.

Best Wishes

Roy and Patricia

Re Alinda - well she was still a widow in 1891, but I found nothing after that.
Re Walt - although deaths are not closed in Ont, there's no index published for 70y - more recent than that, you have to pay a search fee for every 5y block, then pay for the d.cert itself. Ancestry only has to 1939 online - I'm sure 1942 will have been released by now, but not yet compiled into an index, so unless you're in Ottawa, you have to pay a researcher to find the released but not online yet stuff out. My guess is Walt died within the last 70 y - he was the youngest.

You probably have most of this, but...

Briefly, township & range form a lat/long type descriptor of a 6 x 6 mile township block.
Township counts the northing from the US border, and Range counts the westing (easting in east MB) from the last meridian.

When I look at the actual contents, it's clear 1908 is the initial filing date, so at least 3 y before letters patent were granted.
So you'll have to come back when they've added more images.

Hello mgnv

Many thanks for the new information - we are again in your debt !
Some fascinating stuff here, & a very special thankyou for finding William Mason's death in 1914 - & for confirming the death of Walter Luther Mason in 1940.

You were right about the daughters of Walter Cosford Mason.
Margueretta Teresa & Eva Ella did marry the Lynch brothers George Martin + John Joseph - & both couples went on to have eight children !

Their brother Walter Luther Mason (born Toronto 1881 - died Toronto 1940) is not so easy to track.
There is a marriage on Familysearch that could be him as it takes place in Toronto on 26 April 1905 - the same place + date as his sister Margueretta married John Joseph Lynch...unless it is a coincidence ?

His parents are given as Walter Mason + Mary Dixon which troubles me as the maiden name given for Mary is usually Scott (although i can't find the marriage record myself...or Mary's death)...unless it is a typo ?

The bride is recorded as Janet Elizaberth Nicol (born about 1876 / 1877), daughter of Robert Nichol & Susanna (Hardy) & sister of Priscilla F. Nichol - who married John Kingsnorth....i can't find this family anywhere & i have been unable to find if this Walter & Janet Mason had any children or where they lived.

I would welcome your opinion about this marriage - do you think it sounds possible or do you think i could be on the wrong track ?

Best Wishes
Roy + Patricia
