Must have named another child Margaret too as 6 days old on the 1841 census and this one died in 1840.

Have you any of the children's birth certs to confirm Ann's maiden name? The marriage cert for the correct marriage will give you James's father.

Several trees on Ancestry have him as married to Ann Smith but none have any sources for the children's births to confirm her maiden name.

1881 - could Margaret be Ann's mother - POB is the same. On one of the family trees John's occupation is given as joiner on his marriage cert - John here is also a joiner:
