Hi hoping someone can help me here i Have two marriages 1
Hugh Clark 33 and Christina Chisholm 34 married 1930 Dalry
Christina parents are listed as John Chisholm farmer Deceased & Margaret Fraser.

2nd marriage is Christina`s sister Elisabeth but no mention of a father

Alfred Cormack 21 and Elisabeth Chisholm 22 married 1929 Thurso
Elisabeth's parents are listed as Margaret Chisholm house keeper.
if someone could do a birth look up two see if the two sisters have the same father thanks

Thurso and Dalry are in Scotland so you'll need to use Scotland's People site which is pay per view (purchase of credits required).

Bethany

Bethany Report 12 Feb 2013 20:00

as far as i know the sisters were born in Dalry Kirkcudbrightshire Dumfries and Galloway

Bethany

Bethany Report 12 Feb 2013 20:06

okay thanks Marie will do that :-)

GlasgowLass Report 12 Feb 2013 21:09

Bethany,
Thurso is a very long way from Dalry, Kirkcudbright. They are at opposite ends of Scotland (North/South) and over 350 miles apart.

Scottish marriage certs are pretty straightforward.
If a mother's name says "Margaret Chisholm" with no maiden or current surname,it suggests that she was never married.
It is very unlikely that these particular Christina and Elizabeth were sisters

GlasgowLass Report 12 Feb 2013 21:50

Hi Bethany,
On SP there are 2 marriages for couples named John Chisholm and Margaret Fraser.
1st marriage was 1883. Inverness, Inverness
2nd Marriage was 1885 Kiltarlity, Inverness
The 2nd marrige does seem to produce a daughter named Christina. but she was born in Kiltarlity in 1887

Dalry, Kirkcudbright
There were no female Chisholm births registered in Dalry between 1890 and 1910
There were 10 female births registered throughout the rest of Kirkcudbright in this period, but none were called Christina or Elizabeth.
How did you derive that your family were from Dalry, Kirkcudbright?

Andysmum Report 12 Feb 2013 22:31

There are actually 3 places called Dalry.

One near Kirkcudbright, one in Edinburgh and one in North Ayrshire.

Are you sure you have the right one?

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 12 Feb 2013 23:06

Andysmum,
Ran a check and Hugh Clark and Christina Chisholm as per Bethany's original thread, definitely married in Dalry, Kirkcudbright in 1930.
However, is there evidence that she had a sister called Elizabeth, unless Bethany found them on a 1911 census?

Bethany

Bethany Report 13 Feb 2013 00:16

Thanks for your help anne and andysmum as you have probably figured im having s a bit of difficulty with this side of the family.
This marriage is sure as they are my husbands grand parents on his mums side

Alfred Cormack 21 and Elisabeth Chisholm 22 married 1929 Thurso
Elisabeth's parents are listed as Margaret Chisholm house keeper.

And have always been told that the chisholm side was from st johns town dalry Kirkcudbright

However i was told 1 of 7 sisters married Hugh Clark and told today a 2nd Married a sailsbury from sailsbury didnt think that was much but have now found there is a
William Sailsbury 37 Dalry & Jessie Chisholm 31 Srathpeffer
Jessie parents are the same John Chisholm & Margaret Fraser maybe a grace/gracie as another sister

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 13 Feb 2013 11:11

Hi Bethany,
Scottish Marriage records are quite specific and take the same form.
Evidently the girls called Christina and Jessie are sister as they have the same parents.
I would guess that on their marriages, the mother's name is given as Margaret Chisholm m.s (maiden surname) Fraser.

On the marrige of Elizabeth in Thurso, it gives a mother only as Margaret Chisholm.
If no maiden name is provided, it invariably means that the mother was unmarried.
Edit:
I am assuming that Elizabeth Cormack died in 1985 age 73.( matches with other name:Chisholm)
Death registered in Caithness.
You may need to look at this and see if a father's name is recorded

Potty Report 13 Feb 2013 11:34

When did Wiliam and Jessie marry? Would we be able to find them on a census?

Bethany

Bethany Report 13 Feb 2013 15:33

Sorry thought had put the year for William & Jessie it was 1929 thanks for all the help so far, yes Anne that's the right Elisabeth but would not be appropriated for me to ask about the info for her death cert family tragedy

Potty

Potty Report 13 Feb 2013 15:54

Have you actually viewed the marriage certs for all of the marriages or are you going on what others have told you?

Bethany

Bethany Report 13 Feb 2013 16:10

yes have view the marriage certs for all thinking it would clarify things but just have more things that dont add up

Potty

Potty Report 13 Feb 2013 16:17

I think you need to look for this family on the 1911 census -all three of the girls should be on that census and two of them, Jessie and Christina should be on the 1901 - the 1911 should give their POB which will help to find them on the 1902

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 13 Feb 2013 19:40

there are 60 matches for Christina and 94 matches for Jessie in 1901 and 1911 :-(

Can't narrow down without credits

Bethany

Bethany Report 13 Feb 2013 20:08

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 13 Feb 2013 22:10

I know it doesn't fit with the Kirkcudbright bit, but I have just found (in my 1868 gazetteer) that there was/is a village called Dalroy, near Nairn. This is much nearer to places like Thurso, Strathpeffer and Caithness.

Bethany

Bethany Report 13 Feb 2013 22:42

Thanks Andysmum will keep that in mind an re got through the info I have to see what I can turn up

Potty

Potty Report 14 Feb 2013 12:32

scotlandspeople has only 2 births for an Elizabeth Chisholm in 1906 and 1907 (Elizabeth's birth years, unless she lied about her age on her marriage) and there are 2 with the same age on the 1911. One of those is living with a Margaret in Inverness-shire. For the cost of a few credits you could look at those and then trace Margaret back.

If you can get that Margaret's YOB and POB from the 1911, those of us with access to other sites could trace her back through the census.
