I am looking for the parents of Joseph Priest born 1811 in Charlesworth, Glossop,Derbyshire. I have found a birth record on 'family search.org' which said they were John & Mary(The surname was spellt Preist) . I believe they came from Yorkshire but there are many John Priest's marrying Mary's that I'm stuck.

In all of the census Joseph Priest said he was born in Derbyshire around 1811. He lived in yorkshire in 1841,then Hyde, cheshire 1851, I think Derbyshire in 1861 and then settled in Marple Cheshire.

You must know something else please.

There is a Joseph Priest in Yorkshire with a Harriet Priest in the 1841 census

Joseph and Emma had 10 children, 2 born in Hyde cheshire, 1 in Glossop Derbyshire , 2 in Penistone Yorkshire and theothers were Marple Cheshire so they moved arround a lot but i don't know why.

I see the last two children were names John and Mary so that could be a clue. It is usually the first born son named after the fathers father. But not is this case??

You have to remember that not a lot of people kept birthdays in these early years and a lot of them put their baptism year as the year of birth or about them. A nailer would go where the best pay was in his area. They were paid by the amount of rods they used and the quality of their work.

I see from the 1851 census that Joseph was a Master Nailmaker employing 2 men so it was his own business.

I found birth records for all the children except the oldest son Joseph Priest having seached other census' I now beleive he was registered as Joseph Henry Evans as his parents were not married.

PM received ....

Yes this is him, I have found no record of him marrying Anne and you will notice there is a lodger called Emma Evans. He is found living with an Emma Priest in Derbyshire in 1861 and then they are in Marple Cheshire after that. There son James was my great grand farther so I got his birth certificate and found his mother was Emma Evans. No record of joseph marrying Emma. There is a Joseph Priest with a Harriet Priest in Yorkshire 1841 census i think this may be him also

---------------------------------------------------

The lodger Emma Evans is aged 17 and Joseph is 40.
Do you think it likely that they are your gt grandfather's parents ?

Heather

Heather Report 15 Feb 2013 12:51

Yes, Emma Evans name is on the birth certificate and her birth year on the census' ranges from 1831 - 1834 and his from 1811 - 1814

I have found death records for Joseph Priest in 1887 age 77 and Emma Priest 1884 age 51 He was burried in Marple after dying in the workhouse. They lived in Marple Cheshire so I think this is correct.

Heather

Heather Report 15 Feb 2013 13:03

Emma also was burried in Marple, I found the information on 'Familysearch.org'
