Find Ancestors

Neither of the trees on Ancestry has a source for Mary Elizabeth's birth, although one of them has an exact DOB (7 April 1855). Also, neither of them has her parents. No birth is coming up on scotlandspeople for her. There are two for a Mary Armstrong in Glasgow in 1855 but not in Bridgton.

I think you will have to get the birth cert of one of the other children to confirm Jane's maiden name.

There is a tree on Ancestry.co.uk with Mary Elizabeth Armstrong born 1855 in Bridgeton and she will be on 1861 census as born in Scotland.

Mary - thank you so so much. I had both those census returns. . where did you find the info regarding Robert and Jane having a daughter Mary E in 1855 ? And we still do not positively know the surname of Jane that Robert married. What has made this even more difficult for me is that there are 2 separate Armstrong families on this side of the tree and both use Jane and Mary amongst their childrens names - it doesn't help !!

I think this confirms mary e Armstrong marrying thomas brodie 1878.

1901 John and Jane Stalker have nephew Joseph G Armstrong with them.

Robert and Jane had Mary elizabeth Armstrong 1855 i n Glasgow scotland.
A Mary Elizabeth Armstrong 1855 Bridgetown glasgow married Thomas Brodie a cotton dyer they had John Lamb Brodie in Wetheral carlisle 1879 who became a reverand died in canada 1921.

I think this is Robert and Jane's daughter.Maybe they were visiting mum Janes parents in 1855 when Mary Elizabeth was born .

Gosh Potty, that could well be it ! I wonder whether Jane's family did all move from Glasgow to Cumberland - food for thought. I will have a quick check and see if I can see Jane Duncan living near Robert in 1841. Thanks again.

To Mark - thanks for finding that marriage but it can't be the right one as I have checked and their eldest child was born 1846. Robert is still single age 20 and living at home on 1841 census so the marriage must have taken place around 1841-1846. Thanks for trying.

Reggie - I think I must pack up for the day - I can't even think straight anymore - Robert Armstrong (not Laing) married JANE not Margaret. Sorry to have made such a hash of this.

Mark - it could well be the correct marriage but as she failed to give even an area on census returns, I really don't know. I am noting it in case it is the right one. For future generations Imust remember to be precise when I fill in my own census returns !!

I have looked on freebmd for a marriage of a Robert Armstrong to a Margaret 'anything' from when records began up till 1858 but unless I am blind cannot see an appropriate one.

Daughter Jane Armstrongs birth cert will give you MMN then look for the marriage, that will give you fathers details and possibly her age, then you can start looking for her with her parents
