Find Ancestors

I have searched both scotlandspeople and familysearch but without further info, difficult to tell.

Margaret, in order to go back further, you will need to get Jane's marriage cert (from other thread - married to Robert Armstrong in Wetheral, Cumberland, 1844). This will give her father's name and occupation.

I think most of us have fallen victim to this at one time or another.

Having said that, there were only baptismal records pre 1855, but if we are lucky, the child's date of birth may be recorded.
Information was dependant on the record keeping of the Parish and varies from one to another.

I was looking at an OPR fiche ,when I spotted an entire family who were baptised on the same day. Not one of them had a DOB or an age included.
I dont expect the parents had sextuplets either!

There is one area where we might find a dob but not a baptism... these are invariably un- named, and unbaptised children who died in infancy.
The info is taken from Mortcloth records.
Both SP and FS use the mortcloth info and convert it to produce a birth and death record.
If you were to purchase these from SP, both will result in the same Mortcloth page.

It's not true that only Baptism records are available pre statutory in Scotland.

Alhough most OPR records do focus on the baptism, in very many cases the actual birth date is recorded also. In rural districts people would sometimes let baptisms go until doing several children at one time. In such cases the actual dates of birth may, or may not be shown. Beware of assuming children are twins or triplets in such cases, as I have!

SP can be searched for a potential baptism match and crossmatched with the IGI
There is no baptism for a JANE Duncan in Lanarkshire 1820 but possibly baptised as JEAN as these are interchangeable names.
You also need to be certain of the birth/baptism year

What do you know about your Jane?
Clues to parents are often reflected in her own children.
A first daughter is normally named for the maternal grandmother, and therefore if she was any of the above. we would expect Jane's 1st daughter to be named either Jean or Catherine

The best you can hope for is her baptism.

You maybe able to find the information on familysearch, which is free.

If so, would you be willing to see if you can find the birth of Jane Duncan born 1820 Glasgow in order to establish her parents ? Thank you for any help you can give.
