I'm looking for the origins of a John Henry Webb, a mariner born in Essex about 1814 Don't know where. At marriage in 1859 he said his father was also John Webb, a blacksmith and his mother Hannah Cooke. In Australia by 1853 and died there in 1871. Margaret

Greetings Ann and Alviegal Yes the marriage and deaths Alvie provided are correct. I'm on the hunt now in Thaxted for a sibling Marianne. Thank you Ann. The marriage to Catherine was bigamous as John Henry Webb was already married and had a daughter with my 2xggm Mary Gay. Through my searches I have found a great granddaughter of JHW and Catherine and we are both now on the trail for his origins. There is a seaman (Mariners records on Find My Past) from Little Coggeshall in Essex who looks promising but without Parish Records or other links to Coggeshall we're stuck. Wife Catherine was a convict from ireland and there are many convicts with the name John Webb. His being a seaman is strong as he was a waterman in Balmain, a Sydney Harbour suburb. I appreciate your replies. Margaret-Sydney Australia

Have you checked Seax for Parish Registers? They were supposed to be putting the majority of the records on line, to access by a small subscription

Someone has this on Ancestry as John Henry's first marriage in Australia and then Catherine in 1859 which means he was in Austaria in 1841.

Thanks Mel
I have all the info you gave and my co-researcher and I have discounted the marriage of John Webb and Jane Murphy as we have tracked this couple through. JHW was often in the press for being a "bad boy" and we know a fair bit about his movements from 1853 to his death. The National Library of Australia has digitised newspapers and it's a wonderful resource by the name of TROVE. He features quite a bit in the Water Police Court for altercations with women and for being in fights with other watermen. Catherine's former husband was a convict overseer on Norfolk Island and she had a child Mary with him born on NI. Mary later went to live with JHW when Catherine married him. All Catherine's children with JHW are known. There is a former mystery wife Frances and son James that we have not got to the bottom of yet. Frances' death notice in the SMH says she was the wife of JHW boatman of Balmain. He was married to Catherine at that time and had formerly been married to Mary Gay. Ben Johnson was also still alive when Catherine married JHW. Bigamy on a big scale. For the first post I only gave a little of the story as it's JHW's origins in Essex we are seeking. If anyone has info about where and when he married Frances (nothing else known) we would also be grateful. We have discounted the 1853 marriage in Melbourne of a JHW and Frances as the timing for this and his marriage to Mary Gay does not add up.

Thank you DetEcTive
Your info on the Parish Registers is most welcome. I had looked on Ancestry and Find My Past but had not thought to look if there were County records available. Definitely worth a try. JHW's age is inconsistent through time as often reported but guesstimates suggest born circa 1814. He could have been born before this. You may save me a expensive flight from Sydney!
