Penny & Fredk, as you say many of us are pensioners and money is a scarce commodity for us. A lot of my ancestors are Scottish and when I checked my bank statement for the last 6 months I could not believe the amount I had spent on Scotlands People :-(

Having dealt with most of the records of those who lived and died in Scotland, I am now looking at those that emigrated to the USA. I have found many census records and have been provided with many more from the wonderful volunteers on here, however I have reached the stage with my tree that I cannot go any further to try and find out spouses maiden names and marriage dates, as I would need to subscribe to other sites and I cannot afford to go down that route.

.... and they're not coming back to answer questions!

I can but agree that whoever is advising or giving guidance about how to ask for help does not appear to be considering the questions being asked very carefully.

At least 2 of the posts that I have seen on the WDYTYA board were from people who were trying to trace their friends (Who may still be alive) rather than their ancestors or their relatives. Surely whoever was advising or guiding the person asking the question should have directed the enquirer towards Friends Reunited rather than encourage them to post on Genes Reunited.

I was under the impression that the GR people were giving guidance as to how to ask for help on the WDYTYA board.

Having looked at some of the requests, it would seem that they aren't

Im also not sure why they have created a seperate board for the event.

Last year it was on this board where everyone could see it, and this year, you have to go to a seperate link, away from the main board?

Many people doing family research are pensioners. Thus as Penny said money is short.

lets not forget that it is quite an expensive hobby too - its not all GR's fault.
With most hobbies you can get a fair dea of the cost before you start really getting into it ( cycling needs a bike for instance, you buy according to your budget)

its easy to get caried away and spend a lot of money at this hobby, and the draw to get ''just one cert' is quite strong. People just dont have that sort of money.

I agree with you both totally - and the many changes to the site recently haven't always been for the best. I'm not silly enough to think things can always stay the same but change really has to be for the better and I don't think that is the case on Genes at the moment.

I think some of the problem with the boards being slower than they were when we joined is that at that time there were not many records online so each time something new was put online there was a flurry of requests for look-ups and this kept anyone who wanted to help very busy. Nowadays you can find so much online and I think more people have subscriptions themselves so don't need so much help from others.

Unfortunately, GR shot themselves in the foot, and the mass migration to another site left this site in the sorry state it is today

Isn't it just such a shame that the boards are not as busy as they were a few years ago when just one board could receive 40/50 messages per hour, or more, every day !!

This was what is was like when I first joined and started to use the boards - you really struggled to keep up and there was SO much help.

This would have SO impressed the people at the 'road show' and would attract a lot more new members !

If only we could get back to those days..........................
