Hi, Am looking to trace Parents -Maurice & Ellen (Leahy) EGAN, son Thomas b1874 and daughter Ellen b1870 in IRELAND, we think Cork City .

Any help would be gratefully received.
Thomas is my great grandfather who came to Scotland in on around 1888, the story goes that the family were headed to America when they were split up.

Thank you in advance for any help

Hi Catherine, are you saying that they went to USA and for some reason had to leave Thomas behind?

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Feb 2013 14:31

Hi MarieCeleste

The family story is that they were planning to go to the states from Cork,
Thomas ended up in Glasgow and never knew where the rest of the family went to. There was no contact at all. He was 14, we don't know if there was a mix up or an argument or some family problem that meant he got left behind

He did well in Glasgow, has left a large family behind and we are now looking to unite with the rest of our family if anyone can help at all.

regards
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

How do you know the names of Thomas's parents? I can't find Thomas in the 1891 census in Scotland - unless he's in the Army, but that one has born England. Have you found any of them in a census?

Janice

I'm not 100% convinced on that census, if the facts are correct on it then he'd been in USA since 1880 and Thomas would only have been 6 then, not 14 as Catherine claims.

He was 30 at first marriage, so that would have been 1889 - doesn't fit with what is known. Also, the wife's name and birthplace is wrong (although he could have remarried)

Not sure about "our" Maurice being born 1859 - he would only have been 11 when daughter Ellen born in 1870 and would only have been 15 for the birth of Thomas in 1874.

More investigation needed .......

Eringobragh1916 Report 24 Feb 2013 18:29

From what I can work out Maurice Egan b 1859 was the son of Maurice Egan and Ellen Leahy who were also ? the parents of Thomas Egan b 1879.That is unless there were two Maurice Egan's marrying two Ellen Leahy's

Maurice b. abt 1859 could be the one who emigrated to the US on the Bothia out of Cobh aged 22 in 1892.

Hi Everyone,
I'm so flabbergasted by the effort you guys are putting in for me, this is just amazing.

Janice -I know Thomas's parents names from his marriage certificate which we have here in the family.
Pam - am so grateful for the information - we didn't know about the parish. Do you have a link for the Irish information for St Peter and Pauls? There might be more children or the marraige record for Maurice and Ellen.

Marieceleste -
Im so touched that you referred to Maurice as "our", this means so much to our family to try and find them. Thank you so much.

I agree that Margaret Egan married to Maurice would not tie in with the dates we know. Oh fingers crossed we could find them somehow

Thank you does not cover how I feel xxx

That makes more sense now if Maurice was the son of Maurice!

Catherine, you're very welcome - we enjoy doing it.

I have written today to St Peter andSt Pauls Parish register to see if they can send me the birth certificate and asking for any further information they might have. It's hard to think there would only be two children (Thomas and Ellen)
If Maurice was a son it would make sense that he was older (by 15 years?)

Points to a lot of other children in between maybe

Fingers crossed for that x

That seems to fit well, Pam.

I've searched passenger lists and can find lots of Ellen Egan's who could fit the bill but not her parents.

Catherine - on Thomas' marriage certificate does it give an occupation for his father?

Catherine

Catherine Report 25 Feb 2013 19:59

Hi everyone , just had a look at the baptismal records (thanks for the link) om my it was so emotional, made me cry.
Maurice and Thomas had the same godmother too.

Marie Celeste - Maurice senior was listed as a Carpenter on the marriage certificate.

Thank you all so much for the time and effort you have put in to help me.
God bless x

The Family Search.org, think it's the Church of the Latter Day Saints.
