Find Ancestors

Was born in Germany (Prussia) in 1815. I have found him living at number 13 Sloane street London in the 1871 census with a wife Rosina who I believe was born in France.

I'm trying to make out his occupation, it says I think, importers of Swiss ??

I cannot find him on any other census. His children were born in England.

Verbal family information says Louis had an illegitimate child called Thomas Leach born aprox 1855

I'd say Importer was his occupation and they were the items he brought in.

There are a few newspaper articles in 1855 about the bankruptcy of a Louis Lichenstein who was an importer of foreign goods.

He was on the ER in 1876 so must have been eligible to vote:

Yes this is the family, thank you for the information. We had been led to believe he had made money and so being made bankrupt sounds feasible.

In Re: Lichenstein

This was an application for certificate made by Louis Lichenstein of Great St Helen's, described as an importer of foreign goods. The bankrupt was one of the Hungarian noblemen who sacrificed their estates by aiding the revolutionist party and who accompanied Louis Kossuth to this country.

The debts are returned at £3740, assets £680

Mr Chidley, for the assignees, recommended the bankrupt to the favourable consideration of the court. The bankrupt had started in business at the suggestion of several sympathisers, who were now creditors, and who had been in possession of the state of his circumstances, and he had not forfeited the confidence of the creditors.
Mr Lawrence supported the bankrupt and stated that the failure arose from the war.
His Honour said that as the principal creditors consented, and the failure arose from partly unavoidable loss and misfortune, he would grant an immediate second class certificate.
