Find Ancestors

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this, and can't seem to find a marriage certificate anywhere for my maternal grandparents. They were called Ada Lister (maiden name) DOB 1888 don't have specific date of birth and Joseph Mitchell same year of birth. No idea of year/place of marriage, but may have lived in Washington, Tyne & Wear. They had 3 children. Then moved to Dorset Avenue, Birtley, County Durham. County Durham is now classed as Gateshead for some reason. I have searched for a marriage entry for at least 10yrs either side of 1900, 1920, but no joy.

Any help would be really appreciated.

When and were the children born so that we can look for a marriage shortly before then?

There is always the possibilty that they didn't actually marry, or if they did, it was her 2nd. She'd be recorded under her 1st married surname, not her maiden name.

Have you considered that a marriage might have taken place in Scotland or Ireland?

Where did you look?

And what makes you say that County Durham is now classed as Gateshead?

The town of Gateshead was part of County Durham until the big shake-up in 1974

When and where was each of their 3 children born?

In which year did the family 'move to Birtley'?

Was/is your mother named MARY...born 1931?

That's the only Mitchell/Lister birth in County Durham

There is no second forename on Ada's birth record.
'S' is part of the reg'n district name (SOUTH Shields)

Their children were called Florence/Lilian/Mary i only know the DOB for Mary because she was my mother, she was the youngest.Her date of birth was 11/2/1931.
She died on Dec 28/2008. My grandmother Ada was married previously and had a son called William Brownlee Stephenson. His father was killed in the 1st world war in France, but I don't know the exact date, or his first name, his middle and surname were Brownlee Stephenson. William was born in 1914. I don't have exact dates of birth for him, his son, or my grandparents. I don't think Ada had a middle name, if she did, it would have been Elizabeth, but it's not mentioned on her death certificate. My grandparents lived in a caravan originally when the children were born, and moved to birtley after the birth of my mother, dont have an exact date sorry.

Why didn't you say that Ada had been married previously?

Just go to freebmd and look for a marriage using her first married name!!!!!!!!

You really should not withold info of which you are aware when asking people to help you
