If she was widowed, surely she would have married as a Sampson?

What info is there about Sarah on the 1929 marriage cert?

Who registered the 1939 death?

If the woman who married Seddon is definitely the one who married Sampson, the fact that she re-married using her maiden name would suggest that she had been 'dumped'

Divorce was unusual, to say the least, for all but the most affluent.

If Arthur hadn't died, and there wasn't a divorce................!

The warrington, Lancs, Arthur Sampson sounds promising. bricklayer and builder are pretty close, son Arthur born about correct time. I'll try searching with these details on other family trees something might turn up, not sure what else I can do, thanks all. Maureen

Hello Maureen, what else you can do is order the relevant certificates from GRO to avoid speculation and taking a wrong turn.

The marriage to Seddon needs to be compared to the 1929 marriage to make sure of Sarah's marital status and also that the father's details match on both.

Just a point about divorces, I've found a couple recently where the parties were far from affluent. Some solicitors would take cases on an "in forma pauperis" basis. I reckon they'd take these cases if they knew the co-respondent would be good for the costs.

I have the wedding cert (copy) of marriage, Sarah Haynes to Arthur Sampson. I have the original birth cert of their son, John George, I was informed by a family member (now deceased) that Sarah married again to William Seddon. I have seen entry on BMD. I also have copy of cert for her death. I have her family tree, but want to find relatives of Arthur Sampson. I have sent out requests to other tree members who have an Arthur in their family with approximate birth date and am awaiting for replies. If this does not bear fruit then I dont know what to do next.

The info from the family member may not have been accurate

To verify-or otherwise - you will need to get the cert of the Haynes-Seddon marriage to compare her father's details

As I said earlier, if it's the same woman, re-marrying in her maiden name suggests that Arthur was alive..............it will be interesting to see what she said about herself on the later marriage cert

Maureen - how can you know for definite that the death certificate you have for Sarah Seddon is the same woman - does it list all previous names for her?

Maureen

Maureen Report 19 Mar 2013 14:24

her death cert does not list previous names and occupation stated wife of william Seddon. One of her sisters was in attendance. So obviously her and Arthur split up, she came back to her home town to give birth. Arthur recorded as father, then a few years later she married, I have not received marriage cert yet, but have got death cert. Family members told me that she married William Seddon, so she must be a bigamist. This suggests to me that Arthur stayed down south and she didnt think it would matter to use her maiden name for 2nd marriage.

Finally received 2nd marriage cert. states Sarah as spinster nothing in occupation, although her son would have been almost 3 years old, same father. William was a widower, maybe a marriage of convenience. It is definitely the same Sarah, her now deceased son told me.
