You said John cowburn born in 1851 is the son of James born 1796 and his wife Alice dootson this is confusing me as Johns wife is Sarah Dootson

well often they married people in their village and they had the same names ....I have noticed with this name cowburn there are a lot in that area you could send for the marriage certificate but that wont give relationship between the dootsons

Ann

Ann Report 28 Feb 2013 15:17

KempinaThermalhat

What makes you think that Alice's maiden name was Dootson? I can't see anywhere on this thread that gives that as her maiden name (apart from your post at 14.54)

Yes really sorry Ann .....I cant find a marriage at the moment but have found a source which MAY make Alice Green the most likely which would fit better !

Like you say at this stage its down to Parish records

I will not delete anything as it often helps to leave it knowing what I,ve done wrong

And still no sign of a older child

I would guess the first one of these is your John as on the 1861 census he is a grandson age 10 so probably born 1850 (3mths old in 1851 so could be born Dec mmn Cowburn which probably means Ellen was his mother

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1850
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
COWBURN John Westhoughton Bolton COWBURN WH/4/500
COWBURN John Westhoughton Bolton HAYES WH/4/463
