on the 1851 census the head of James & Alice household is George Green age 83 |

I would guess the first one of these is your John as on the 1861 census he is a grandson age 10 so probably born 1850 (3mths old in 1851 so could be born Dec mmn Cowburn which probably means Ellen was his mother |

Think the Baptism is to late have found a Baptism for Alice Green b:1798 Westhoughton bapt: 18/11/1798 Father given as George Green Mother: Hannah |

well often they married people in their village and they had the same names ....I have noticed with this name cowburn there are a lot in that area you could send for the marriage certificate but that wont give relationship between the dootsons |
