I've had a look at the French records on Ancestry and also a look on FamilySearch but nothing coming up.

I've also had a look in the British Newspaper Archives in case he got a mention but no results.

So how do I find out where he had been born? Are French records available to us? I believe they have no central records and you have to search each individual village! That'll take some time.
