Flip - do you have access to the Lancashire parish records on Ancestry? If not, I do but haven't a clue which parish is which. |

Thanks MC, I'll read through the images. I've tried to find him on the 1851 census but no luck so far, although I had no idea of his birth age, so will look again. |

Still haven't read through MC's military records, but I think Andrew may have found the parish, Coulton is just outside Ulverston(e) and I think Brow Edge may have come under this parish looking at the geography! |

Leaving the army in 1821 after more than 12 years service William Fell returned to Backbarrow to work in a paper mill and later a Cotton Mill. In 1824 when claiming a pension in Dublin Fell stated that he was 'worn out with service'. He also worked as an armed guard on the local coach and as an old man made toffee and cakes for visitors to to the lakes, meeting them at Newby Bridge while wearing his medal. There is a full biography of him in CWAAS Transactions, 3rd Series, Vol IV. |

Thanks for the link Chris - that's an interesting find! So, he left his medal to Dr Gilpin of Ulverston - will take a look for him on the census. |

It would appear it was Dr Bernard Gilpin surgeon who paid for the headstone, unmarried and living in Ulverston 1841-1861 census, but died later in 1861. His probate names his nephew as the executor, effects under £4000. |

Well, I'm grateful all for the input - I now have a story around the MI - and quite an interesting one thanks to you all. I'm going to follow up a bit more, but as the birth/marriage records are likely to be in Cartmel and pre-date the on-line available records will resort to the local RO. |
