I'm trying to find any Merchant Navy/Navy records relating to my late father Dennis Arthur Maine 12/10/1923 - 10/10/2008. He was born in Axbridge Somerset. I know he was in the arctic convoy but not what ship he was on. I know that he was a survivor from the SS California that was sunk in July 1943. I believe when his parents died, his aunts sent him to Dartmouth Naval College. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you. Dee.

Merchant Seaman records 1918 to 1941 are on Findmypast. Making a free search with surname Maine and yob 1923 +/- 1, the only results are 3 with the initial A, one James George, and one initial R.

Assuming he stayed in the Merchant Navy, explore this link from the National Archives

Deez,

Do you have anything at all from your Dad that has his service number on it? If so, if it starts with an "R", that would tell you that he was Merchant Navy, and it is a good starting point for any research.

This could be his medal record

This looks like his records at the National Archives - date of birth is right, but a year out
