On a recent post it was suggested that a death could be found by using the DOB. I have tried this on FreeBMD, but all I get is "not a valid DOB" Any suggestions? Bob

Denburybob Report 10 Mar 2013 20:39

Just to add a bit more to my post, I am looking for death for Amy Spencer, born 27th October 1888. She disappears after the 1911 census. She may or may not have married. Bob

If the person died after 1969 then the death may be found by using the birthdate

Thanks for that Jax. Two possibles there, I can exclude the two with middle names. Bob

Hi, Bob -
Following on from your reminder about Amy on your other thread:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1341508

Did you investigate the two possible deaths suggested by Jax?
What was the result?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Jun 2014 22:39

Hardly any post-1969 deaths are on freebmd

You have to use a site for which you pay to input the DOB as a search tool

Bob - where was she in 1911?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Jun 2014 22:52

I don't see her in 1911, either. She was still alive in 1911 - the census record says her parents had 8 children, all still living

for our ref., here she is in 1901:

Just a suggestion: [EDIT: On second thoughts, probably far too wild a guess to pay much attention to.]

this is the only Hertfordshire marriage of an Amy Spencer without a middle name, 1906-50 -
Marriages Mar 1913 (>99%)
Moore William Spencer Edmonton 3a 910
Spencer Amy Moore Edmonton 3a 910

If that were to be her, then there are these possible deaths:

Deaths Dec 1918 (>99%)
Moore Amy 29 Leicester 7a 623

Or, if she didn't marry:

Reggie - you don't have to pay.
DOB only appears on d.certs after 1969q1, and FreeBMD has only 5 completed quarters post 1969q1. However, you can search deaths using DOB on Ancestry via:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7579
Although Ancestry won't let you view their transcription directly without a sub (for post-1915 certs), they will place an order for a d.cert (or b./m.cert), but after their mark-up for placing the order, the cost is abt 250% of what you'ld pay if you placed the order yourself.
However, if you click on the shopping basket, they will show you what they would order, and this contains almost all the details in the GRO index - the main details omitted are DOB/age on d.certs, spousal name on m.certs, and mother's maiden surname on b.certs. Even if FreeBMD haven't transcribed the entry yet, you can view FreeBMD's image of the printed page (i.e., thru 1983) via the view images link on their home page. It's a klunky interface, but it will get you there eventually.

It's Grace born Bradford 1912 according to Bob's tree on ancestry.

"Grace was born in the W/H in Bradford and was brought up, for the first 3 or 4 years in an orphanage run by Anglican Nuns in Paddington. She then went to a charity school in Chingford, London E4 until she was 14." ... from the tree.

What bothers me is how this particular Amy Spencer has been arrived at - the birth is out of the area for the 2 earlier births and there are lots of Amy Spencers around, so what proves you are following the right one? The b/c would only give her name, occupation and address but not her age - no official adoptions back in 1912 so no file available - and how did m-i-l know she had siblings? Unless, of course Cecily was at the same orphanage/school.

Flip

Flip Report 15 Jun 2014 07:20

What occupation/address did Amy give on Grace's birth cert - I know you've said she was born in the W/H but that could just be the hospital was there another address?

http://www.roystonfhs.org.uk/JournalPages/2010Journal/gracespencer.html

(above gives below, worth a read)

To start with I had only a Birth Certificate and some anecdotal evidence to go on. The Birth Certificate indicated that Grace was born on 19th July 1912 at 217 Horton Lane, Horton, Bradford in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Her mother was Amy Spencer, a parlour maid of the same address. No name was given for the father, indicating that Grace was born out of wedlock...
